Red Margin Wrasse

I have a new Red Margined Fairy Wrasse..lovely fish. Looks like a fully grown male at least 4-5". When I got him a week ago the LFS dismissed the tailfin damage and said it will grow back. It seems to have got a little worse in a week. All other fins are fine.I do have a larger blue tang, but watching the tank behaviour I would guess the male wrasse is probably the dominant fish in the tank even though the Tang is probably a little bigger. I dont see any bullying and I am reluctant to jump into assuming finrot and throwing antibiotics in there. If anything it may have got a little worse rather than better over the week. The fish is otherwise super healthy looking, vigorous and is first to anything that looks like food. Currently eating mixed pellets/flakes, nori pieces and frozen mysis shrimp.Bad photos I know... best I could do.

Could a hermit crab do that...? say when wrasse sleeping on bottom or under rocks..? I do have a reasonably large hermit in there.

Help....Further question..

Help....Further question..

The Wrasse is now swimming off balance it seems and his right side pectoral fin is not being used...just folded flat against his body. The hermit crab went a week ago so he isn't the culprit...is this a disease or is it harassment..?

but what disease..? apart from some tail damage described already below the fish looks OK and eats dry food and mysis energetically

Looks and sounds like fin rot. Use maracyn to get rid of it. Or just keep pristine water and feed him a little more so he can fight it off.

I had a yellow wrasse that got it years ago, I still have him.

Lots of fish disease have fin clamp as one of the symptoms so it's hard to say. The tail marks don't look like fin rot to me, as it doesn't have that ragged appearance. They actually look like bite marks. Was there a puffer or trigger in the same tank?

In any case, I find the following site useful in identifying marine fish disease.

Thanks...no fishlike that. Tomato Clown, Blue Tang and two small Canary wrasse. I do hear a double clicking noise quite often and suspect there is a mantis shrimp in there....would it attack the fish when they are sleeping..?

Interesting that the tail seems to be regrowing but a bit early to be sure.

Maybe fighting with the wrasses. As to the clicking noise, it could also come from pistol shrimp. Based on the pictures, I wouldn't worry too much about the tail but the fin clamping situation is a bit more worrisome. You need to find out what's causing it.

Appreciate the advice, actually the right pectoral which was clamped yesterday is back to about 50% use today...and the tail is definitely regrowing so I guess I am mildly optimistic. I am feeding generously for a short while to reduce stress and competition and encourage recovery. Hoping for the best. Should I be concerned about the possible pistol shrimp..?

Tank is 100G and I have just put a BTA in where the clown now stays most of the time so he really doesnt bother anyone at the moment.

Pistol shrimp won't bother your fish. If it's indeed that, you may want to pair it up with a shrimp goby.

Any way you can get a picture of the fin?

2 weeks on and with the Hermit gone the Ruby Wrasse has regrown most of the damaged fins and I am putting the problem down to bad behaviour by the hermit crab. I guess as the wrasse lie on the substrate to sleep they are easy for the crabs to attack, they can probably chew away on fins without waking the fish. It's a jungle in there, but thre Ruby Wrasse is nearly back to his best so thanks for the helpful replies.
