Rue - I'm not sure, but the particle size of a lot of carbons might allow it to be placed in that section above the RSM skimmer pump. I know that fine particle media like Chemi-Pure tend to compact too much and cut the water flow too much. Maybe someone else can let you know - I've never tried carbon alone in that location.

Donna - I forgot about the RO/DI water extracting more things than tap water - good point. I have all the drinking water rated containers that I need (or have room for) - I just liked this one as it had a handle on the top. No big deal - I won't use the "used" one.

Anyone have a flower anemone in their tank??? I was just looking at some online - low cost, colorful, they don't get too large, don't wander around the tank, and are reef safe and hardy. I know they don't host clowns, but that isn't a need for me.

Thought I would share all the new additions I picked up over the weekend :)

Titans, nice purchases! I too, like the toadstool leather, but they are all great additions! Your pics are really good, too.

Rue, I too would like to know if any other spot is suitable for the media. My first thought is that the water is cleanest at the pump compartment, and that does make the most sense to place carbon, phosban, etc. there. I'm not sure that placing them in the skimmer chamber before the skimming process takes place would be as effective or beneficial. It would sure make things easier, tho. I'll wait for others opinions on this one, too.

Media Placement and Tunze 9002

Media Placement and Tunze 9002

Well, I too have been investigating where to move my media. I currently have it over the skimmer pump but was considering either using a small canister filter of a fluidized reactor to better house the media and also get better circulation around the media. Anyone have any suggestions on al large enough canister filter or fluidized reactor to hold a bag of chemi pure elite and/or purigen /phosguard which would conveniently work with the RSM?

Also, I have about had it with the lack of output on the RSM skimmer and seriously considering a Tunze 9002. For those who installed one, was it a tough job? Also, could someone re-post the page where it showed how to install the tunze?

Thanks.

Korilia 1 or Nano

Korilia 1 or Nano

I am also going to finally add some more flow. I was wondering whether I should go for the Korilia 1 or nano. I like the nano's smaller footprint, but I am not sure if it has enough flow.

I'm running bags of Phosguard and carbon in the space between the heater and the skimmer. Its a lot easier inspect and or remove than under the pumps.

Stuart,
I tried out the different Koralia's.
For my needs I found out:
#1 not enough flow
#3 way to strong for the RSM
#2 perfect. Lots of flow without blowing the corals from the rocks or causing a sandstorm.
Placed mine on the right top side of the tank

Hodge, thanks, I like the idea of the media going in after the skimmer! I'm going to place mine there, too, between the heater & skimmer. That makes it easy to access & monitor, as you have already pointed out. :)
Has it changed the water height in the back, or any problems I should be aware of?

korilia/mdia placement

korilia/mdia placement

Thanks maxreefer for the suggestion on the korilia. I was thinking of buying one of these in tank canister filters and installing it in the back above the skimmer attaching it to the back glass for the purpose of holding chemical media. This would accomplish the media being well contained and also allow better flow for more efficient filtration. Two issues I see. First, I am not sure it will fit comfortably back there. Also, I am not sure it is big enough to hold a bag of chemipure elite. I want to make sure it is big enough for that purpose even though I am currently using purigen in case I want to switch back.

Also, I could simply install one on the right side of the tank instead of a korilia which would serve as additional flow and a place to store chemical media.

Any thoughts?

Titans - nice additions indeed! That Yuma looks like the twin of one on mine.

Stuart - I have a Koralia Nano - it doesn't give a lot of flow, and as a 3rd powerhead I'd go with a 1 or 2. I use the Nano for my salt mix bucket, and if I decide to add it in the tank it would be as a 4th powerhead, not to replace the #1 that I have.

On the in-tank canister it's interesting to me too - media capacity without any chance of cutting the flow (and avoiding that pump chamber). But, I can't find any measurements on it, or how much it will hold. The depth of that back compartment is 3" maximum, so be sure it'll fit in the back before buying it. If there's a Fluval site maybe it will have more size information.

Thanks for the compliments...I purchased the majority of this stuff from other RC members in my area. This site rocks! Nice people. What is the difference between a yuma and a ricordia? They look the same to me.

Titans - There are Ricordea florida and Ricordea yuma. Yumas have the bumps around the neck of their mouth, floridas don't. Actually they usually look quite different in many ways. The floridas usually have a more regular size of tentacles/bumps across the surface, while the yumas have different size bumps on their surface. Once you get used to seeing the 2 it's pretty easy to tell them apart.

Titans: maybe these links on Ricordia will help:

Ricordea.org:

Some nice Ricordea florida pics - compare vs. your Ricordea Yuma:

Stuart - on the Fluval cannister I can't find much on the size. I did fine the Hagen site & page with a manual for the Fluval Plus series. Based on the diagram on page 13 of the PDF manual it looks pretty small, and hard to tell how much, and if carbon or Chemi-Pure would even fit inside. It looks more like it's built to primarily hold a filter pad:

On another note, I saw my big turbo killer hermit crab move into one of the larger empty shells that I purchased for him. Hopefully that will spare another turbo's life.

Heres some pics of the 40 I'm setting up.

This is the whole set up I have'nt got the skirt around the stand yet, but you get the picture.

This is the Calfo overflow I drilled and made for it. I also drilled a hole on the other side of the back for the return.

Here's the sump I put a ASM G-1 for the skimmer and a Quiet one 2200 for the return pump. If you notice its a double view set up something I have always wanted all the drains and so forth are on the back. I have 2 tunze nano streams and a koralia 2 for circ and of course the return. The powerheads are on a wave timer so they pulse one at a time in sequence.
Enjoy.

Looks good mbdave.

Are you going to split up the sump in different chambers?
I have a bigger tank with sump also and added 1 ball valve at the return and 1 at the drain pipe close to the sump just in case I need to shut down to water flow.
Came in handy already a couple times.

Just an idea

Thanks RM for the links...florida's look soooo nice!!! Now I just want a tank full of them! Like skittles of the sea! I think I notice the differences now. Training the untrained eye.

Mbdave - what will you be breeding?

Reefmack Big basement=more tanks:)
Maxreefer I will put a divider in the sump but just to keep a good water level in the skimmer compartment.
Titans I have no idea why they call these tanks breeders, I am not breeding anything I just like the fact they are shallow and have allot of bottom space.
Chow,
