jameshongth- on the powerhead, lots of folks get a koralia 1 or 2 for their RSM. i got a koralia nano becasue i wanted it as small and as "unobtrusive" as possible. i think it does great . my anthelia are right next to it and look like i am aiming a hairdryer at them.

no experience with the vortech so sorry i cant comment. but i love the koralia nano!

Hi snake plissken.

I'm also using 2 Koralia nano for my RSM since Sep07 but I feel that the flow rate is abit at downside :( as such I'm thinking of replace it with either Tunze 6055 or Vortech.

I love vortech becos' of small in size, strong current flow with different of wave mode and it come with night control and most importantly is...lesser heat/no heat produce compare to other brand waver :D !

jameshongth - I had forgotten that Vortech now had 2 models released. The MP40 at a minimum 1,000 gph would be way too much, but the MP20 at 500 is good. Nice controls too.
Hi Reefmack,

For RSM tank, there is a disadvantage as it's no way to stick on the back but only the 2 side of the glass:mad: .

anyway, I'll update if I can get hold of one MP20 in my country but Normally, new product will be release in US first before ASIA so hopefully someone here can make a brief review before me:D .

I have bubbles!!! :)

Well the new venturi came in today for my 9002. And we have bubbles! Thankfully they are all coming out the top, not the bottom (as of yet). I have stuck it in the display area tonight as I really don't feel like breaking everything apart right now.

I am getting bubbles at the throat where the cup goes in, but they haven't started up the tube yet. Tried briefly playing with the "blue knob" and adjusting the height, to no avail. I'm just going to let it run and break in a bit before I get too crazy.

Consensus??? Break off the magnet, or glue the outside magnet inside and use a mag float?

Brent - had the algae filled up that overflow box around your two bulkhead outlets, or was it plugging up the bulkhead outlets?

xdfireguy Give the skimmer a few days to break in. and don't loosen the screw so much that it falls out and gets lost in your rockwork (like I did). I'd probably be running the 9002 now, but lost the screw into my rocks, and hooked up the Remora as the Tunze screws at that time were out of stock for a few weeks.

Reefmak The algae grew inside the overflow box and cloged the bulkheads (I have two drains in the overflow in case one gets clogged). The outlets of the drain lines are clear because they are in the dark sump.

You can see in this picture the overflow gets a lot of light from the MH fixture. The inside of the overflow is green

Brent - thanks for the explanation. Terrible experience that I'm sure you won't let happen again. I guess you folks avoided the flood situation that was threatening not too long ago? Did they ever find and arrest anyone that was poisoning the animals in the zoo up there?

Hi Everyone

Newbee here. It looks like the RSM will be in my near future, I have a couple questions.

Can you see the filter, etc through the tinted back?

Would you recomend the RSM to a newbee like myself?

Thanks,
Dale

Timber - I haven't received my RSM yet, however, I would have to say that teh RSM may be a perfect tank for a newbie. I don't think you can see anything through the smoked glass wall.
Make sure you research, read and ask lots of questions here. These RSM posters here are amazing at replying. ( 15+ thread splits :D )

All - is anyone keeping clams under teh stock lights? I have yet to keep clams in my 6+ years of this obsessions, and am curious if the lighting is not only sufficient, but adequate for clams to thrive.

Thanks

Timberwerks - the RSM is a good tank for people new to the hobby, as are some of the other nanos. I started out in this hobby with the RSM, and it was a great tank for me. None of the nanos are perfect, but I always preferred the look of the RSM over the cube types, and if you get the RSM stand it looks like a piece of furniture. I've replaced a lot of things on my tank but a lot of folks do just fine with the standard tank. You can just barely make out the skimmer, etc. in the back compartment, but even that usually ends up hidden by the rock and the coralline that will eventually cover the back if you let it. That back glass is tinted to be very dark.

dxtr - People are keeping clams under the stock lights, and the best place is up high. But, different types have different requirements. I lost one in my tank, even with a metal halide lamp, due to my own negligence - I had a yellow fiji leather grow over and totally shade the clam, and I put off moving it way too long and lost it. I'd wait for some more replies on the clams from people that are successfully keeping them in stock tanks.

Alright!!! More new members!!!

Alright!!! More new members!!!

Timberwerks - Welcome to the best place to be for RSM owners!!! :D

dxtr - Welcome to you as well!!! Brent F - is our resident expert on clams! Hopefully he will chime in on the best choices.

By the way gentlemen, you both should start your marine critters library! A good place to start is Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D. "MARINE INVERTEBRATES" 500+ Essential to Know Aquarium Species.

If you both have this book, it's easy to refer to a page, photo, and description when you have a question. ;)

Wow, what a nice tank! My LFS had one on display. Everything about it seemed to be quality. I could seethe filter through the back but it's no big deal. I prefer the tinted glass over a black plastic partition.

How do you guy's like the stand?

Are the supplied lights good enough to use for LPS & SPS and other items?

I know lighting has been talked about here but being a newbee I don't understand the topic so I'm looking for a yes or no. I will be studying the topic so I can understand this and other issues. For now I'm looking to see if I need to upgrade anything from the start.

Thanks Again,
Dale

Hey guys,
Havent been in here for awhile thought I would write a Dave update. Had to tear down the RSM and sell off quick,"moved back to CA" The tank is still in OH and I will go get it in Sept. I have a heavy duty mod for it,"I love mods" and will let you all know how it works when completed. I miss hanging out with you guys and gals and look forward to doing it again.

Happy reefing,
Dave

Okay, I'm new to the RSM but I will throw in my two cents...

With regards to the back panel. Once the rock is up, everything disappears. Or just give it time and it will grow over.

The stand is a pain to unwrap when setting up, but it seems to be holding up well and is working for me. It blends nicely with the system.

I'd throw in a comment about lighting (that being stock seems to work for most) but I am running the Nanocustoms 150w hood - it came with the tank that I got - otherwise I would have gone stock. Although the shimmer is nice, the chiller is not :D

You may want to consider adding a powerhead (most, including myself, use a Korallia). Give the stock skimmer a chance. I will be swapping mine out since I got a Tunze 9002 for a song, and I am obsessed with modifying anything stock!

NaCl+H2O - yea, i actually have 2 copies of the Invert and 1 copy of the Marine Fish pocket guides. Also have the Conscious book, and i think 3-4 others various books and reefkeeping magazines laying around collecting dust. I've collected quite the library after 6+ years of this wonderful obsession. LOL

I have read up on everything I am thinking of keeping in the RSM; however, it always seems to hold more value for me, hearing it from those that have actually had successes of failures with specific reef inhabitants.

I don't think I''ll be keeping clam, simply due to the necessity of a Calcium reactor and the livestock I wish to keep. (flame angel among others.)

xdfireguy - yea I have korlia 1 that I will be placing in the upper right hand corner for increased flow. =) And I love modding things too. (modded my 14g not long ago. LOL )

Thanks

mbdave - great to have you stop in & say hi! I was wondering if you made that move to CA. Bummer you had to sell off all of the corals & livestock, but you can have fun replacing them & getting back into the heavy duty modding again!

Well Alright Then!!!

dxtr - My apologies! I thought you were a complete NEWBIE to SW!
Don't give up on the idea of a clam..... Run it by Brent F first! :)

no worries, NaCl+H2O. Lots of times I feel like a Newbie with everything in this obsession. =)
However, anytime I can get advise from someone who started this hobby in 1967, I am ALL ears! =)

Thanks!

Timberwerks: Welcome!! This is a great place to be and I am excited about you possibly buying an RSM. I use the stock lights and have plenty of variety for corals in the tank. I'm happy with the stock lights! :) The stand is very sturdy & holds an amazing amount of 'stuff' that you'll be accumulating ... in no time. :D
I also have a plastic storage unit on wheels with 2 large drawers & 2 small ones ... guess what ... they are all full of more 'stuff'!!
Absolutely I recommend the RSM for a newbie, and for the experienced , as well.
Good luck and 'hope to hear you are the proud owner of a new RSM!!!

mbdave: Hi!! We've missed you here and I was wondering where you have been. Lucky you to be in California!! I love it, love it, love it there!! My favorite place is San Diego, and our house is decorated in Mexican, SouthWest because that way I feel like I'm in SD!!!
I am soooo curious as to your 'heavy duty mod' ... now ... what could it be????? 'glad you gave us an update & let us know you are getting your RSM back in Sept!!

dxtr: I did have a clam for about 2 months, but it died ... and I felt badly so have not tried another one.

DXTR... Kind of you to say!

dxtr- Nice of you to say... Yup, I was 14 and living in Sacramento, CA. No such thing as Silicone Sealant or all glass aquariums! Certainly no idea of the concept of keeping a "Reef Tank" like our RSM's! :) Fish only, bleached coral decor with crushed oyster shell under gravel filtration was the "state-of-the-art"! I had a custom built PexiGlas tank made and used a 40 watt Grow light! Fortunately the concept of "protein skimming" was coming into vogue using a wooden airstone.

Primitive times in the hobby for sure.... gas was 25 cents a gallon, the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album had just been released and keeping a marine aquarium was in it's infancy! Instant Ocean was the ONLY synthetic salt available and if the fish didn't eat Tetra Marin flakes.... well it was a problem!

BTW, I lived in Columbus, OH from 1976 - 1985 and enjoyed several games in the "Horseshoe"!

Warm Regards,
Kent a.k.a. NaCl+H2O Fish
