Skimmer silencer mod (helped some people with performance too)

1) drill (15/64"...want a snug fit for 1/4" tubing)) hole in end up skimmer cup.

2) Insert skimmer pump air intake hose into drilled hole.

The mod will make the skimmer quieter (air intake is now inside the cup and you don't hear the gurgling noises anymore. It may also help with venting the skimmer cup??

Donna Thank you! No I have 5 swimming fish total, 6 in bioload terms if you count the pepermint shrimp

On the K #2, I like the extra flow, but as reefmack said you have to plan ahaead on what types of corals you are going to use. It is a bit stronger than the #1 and thus you have to keep softer stuff away from the front of the powerhead. Overall the koralias are amazing pumps, they dispurse the flow so well without that direct blast you get from other powerheads. I am a HUGE fan, and the price is dirt cheap IMO.

I agree as well with one caveat. If you are considering a mod that requires cutting or that can only be done with the tank empty do that before setting up the tank.

As and example, I cut the electrical cord channel out above my grate so my tank would surface skim with the water filled high enough to hide the surface. This mod would be messy to do in a setup tank because of the plastic dust it creates.

I spent 3 weeks modding my tank before I set it up because I did so many changes (I added an overflow, a sump, a large skimmer rated for 220 gallons and two extra displays bumping my RSM up to 82 gallons)

Hi everyone, I will be poking around a lot on this wonderful thread. You guys are a good help especially to us newbies!

I am shopping for a new RSM. Just about ready to pull the trigger ....and very excited by the way. But I did some research and found a 130d? Is this a digital version or something?

Any info will be appreciated.

The 130D is a new version of the current RSM that fixes many of the problems that people have been doing mods to correct. I don't know when it will be available in the US though.

Ahhhh.... ok I see. So I assume everything ordered online is directly drop shipped from the manufacturer. I would guess the new model will show up on the online retailers website. Maybe that's why all the good deals that are currently going on.

Blitzie - Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the gate mod other than links to other forums, which I'm not allowed to post on reef Central. Basically it involves cutting through the plastic cord chanel above the gate, so the gate can be raised up high enough to allow surface skimming with the water level in front above the back trim. I haven't done this mod myself.

Mister Chips - Welcome to Reef Central and the RSM Club! If you do find the 130D for sale in the US please let us know. It has a digital timer and an improved gate. I think everything else is pretty much unchanged, but I'm not sure. If that's all they changed these aren't changes that will make a big difference in my opinion.

Here's a picture showing the gate mod. I removed the plastic cord chanel above the gate and extended the slots in the grate with a Dremel. If you do this mod try to do it before filling the tank because it makes a mess with small pieces of plastic.

In the back of the picture you can see the mod of adding a CPR90 overflow.

Brent - thanks for the picture - I think I'll bookmark this page for future use! I could have posted a link to your Canreef thread but it probably would have been blocked by RC. Did you also use a dremel to cut off the back lip for the CPR overflow? I'd like to cut that lip off but I'm not sure of the easiest. least messy way to do it. I was even considering trying a wire cutter.

Yes, I used a Dremel because my tank was empty and I could vacuum up the shavings. The plastic is pretty soft. I’d try a box knife if you are going to cut out the back of a tank that is already setup. It might be a little slower but there will be no plastic dust.

My red house links to my Canreef tank journal and that is not blocked.

I received my Tunze Nano Doc 9002 Skimmer today and have it installed!! It was easy . I am not getting any bubbles up the neck yet, but I think patience is required as it could take a few days to break in. It is quiet (although I had no complaints with the stock skimmer for noise) and with the water level being where it is supposed to be (according to the mark on the Tunze body), my back lid does not close.

Donna - great news that you got the Tunze in, and that the install was easy! Yes - give it a couple days to break in. Good luck with it, and let us know what you think once it starts skimming.

I just got my tunze 9002 yesterday and this morning I had some nice scum in the cup ! I also ordered a modified collection cup & media basket from steve t. I hope to receive it any day now. I'll post some pic's when I get a chance.

Hodge: Thanks for the heads up re the lowering of the skimmer ... have you lowered yours?? My husband was going to cut the lid, too, so the cup could stick out. Actually in the manual for the skimmer, it does say to cut the lid on enclosed tanks.

cut the lid?!? my wife would probably have a heart attack!! LOL the clean line and no equipment showing was the only reason I was able to get this tank. LOL

StevieT - your skimmer collection cup, it is only for the tunze 9002, correct? (since the stock fits neatly unre the hood)

My RSm will arrive between 3-7 tomorrow (cross your fingers it arrive undamaged.) and I cannot wait! I am getting my order for LR ready to place tomorrow provided the tank is in "working" order.

Have any of you ordered Lalo LR from the Drs. live aquaria dot com website? I have only purch from saltwaterfish dot com and LFS; however the Lalo looks awesome and at $120.00 for 30# is just right.

Strange - I got no email notifications of new posts in here last night. That happens once in a while, even though Reef Central says it shouldn't.

dxtr - The F&S Lalo is uncured so you can probably expect what may be a long cycle time due to some die-off on the rock. Uncured should also bring in the most critters on the rock - hopefully only desired ones! Looks like nice rock though:

If you don't want to endure a long cycle they do offer a "fully cured" Fiji rock. If you aren't already aware of it there are uncured, cured, pre-cured, and fully cured types of live rock - the more cured it is the more pricey it is. Even with "fully cured rock" there's still a chance you may still get a short cycle. A lot depends on how "fully cured" the rock is, and on how long the shipping time is. I went with a fully cured rock, shipped overnight (not F&S), added some Bio-Spira live bacteria innoculant, and never had a measurable cycle other than the expected nitrates. My rock came with some mushrooms, zoas, green star polyps, tube worms, etc. even though fully cured. The white stuff you see in a lot of lfs is fully cured, but not a lot of life left on it.
