Red Sea Max S-500

I just wanted to share my RSM500 build because I was unable to find many build threads or reviews on this tank when I was doing research prior to purchase.

I went in to my LFS and told them that I was looking to get the best tank available that would be under a ton in weight due to being in a second floor apartment. I was told that if Im willing to open my wallet wide enough the Red Sea Max S500 is the best all in one aquarium available in that size range. So I placed an order that day for a white RSM500. This is a 500 liter all in one tank with a stand, sump, circulation chamber, lighting and skimmer in one package. I understand that I spent more than the sum of the parts for this system but I just liked how everything fit together flawlessly and seemed to be designed to work together. It comes with a 10 bulb t5 light with individual reflectors, a red sea c-skim 1800 skimmer, 3 500gph circulation pumps and gravity fed ato system with resivour built into the display tank.

Things I did/purchased to prepare for the build...
3 month cure/cycle on BRS reef saver + marine pure media
4 bags of fiji pink
2 bags of special grade
1 mp40qd
2 brs dosing pumps
brs dual reactor for carbon and gfo
jbj artica 1/4hp chiller
Finnex 300w HMO digital heater
reef octopus br110 biopellet reactor
emperor aquatics 40w UV
red sea coral pro salt
20 socks

I ordered the tank on march 17 and recieved the tank on the 24th of april. That is a very short waiting period for this tank. I've heard of people waiting six months for the max and reefer series tanks. I lucked out!

Pictures of set up...

Fish on Day 4. Very controversial but I believe very little cycle is required if you have already cycled over half of your surface area for a few months before setting up the tank as I did. I cycled about 100,000 sq ft of rock and marine pure cermedia for 3 months before I set up the aquarium. Never had an ammonia spike or nitrate spike in the tank. A month later and all corals and fish are in excellent health.

First coral day 9

I'll post updates as I get the uv and biopellets set up. I'll be sure to let you guys know if I lose any livestock as this is the first time I have tried this precycle method that I mentioned. day 30ish no issues yet!

General review of this tank
Pros
Well designed everything works together with plenty of room to customize
Great sump set up
modern stand/tank/light appearance
excellent lighting unit 10 t5 individual reflectors
great build quality on glass. clear, clean silicone, great overflow design
filter sock holders built into sump
good return pump 1850 gph
quiet enough

cons
light too bright?
odd size 51x28x28
wait time - I consider myself lucky for waiting only a month and a half
price - $4749 for white (I got my lfs to do $4499 + 100 store credit)
Skimmer that comes with it's not great. Not bad but does not match price tag

to me, that price comes down to how good that fixture is. how much par does release? If its anywhere even close to that of say a giessmann or specific sun or an ati... than then thats $atleast $2k worth your investment..is the tank starfire? some people spend a couple gran there..plus yours comes with skimmer, return, sump, elegent design..so I say not bad at all.

I'm not sure if it's starfire or not. The glass is advertised as ultra clear low iron glass but no mention of starfire. As for the light it is an excellent fixture - seems incredibly bright. I have a lumen meter at work that I could use. Would that work? It reads in lumens rather than par. I assume that can be easily converted. How would I check? Put the sensor part in the water?

Update on the tank: heater shorted out because I had the controller in the sump compartment. Lucky I was in the room when it happened because it was stuck on after shorting out. Got a new one from brs next day and relocated the controller in a slightly less stupid area than the sump compartment.

Great tank, just cleaning my 2nd hand rsm s-500.
Got lucky from a reefer shutting down and paid $600.00 for Rsm (retail for $6k here in Australia) and deltec sc1455 skimmer. Under six months old.

Will be tagging along.

I got my emperor aquatics 40w uv sterilizer set up today. I've got a minor issue with ich with my blue tang that I'm hoping this will help with. I should not have been so stupid to put a purple blue and yellow tang together in a 500 liter tank. Hopefully throwing money at it (uv sterilizer) will help. I've got it set up right behind the stand on the floor.

Pics

I cleaned up my sump a bit last weekend and I'm pretty happy with it now. Before and after pics..

I was able to consolidate 2 pumps feeding my bio pellets and uv down to 1 larger pump. My 1/4hp chiller was having a hard time keeping up in 90 weather with so many pumps running.

I got some Ora pieces from barrier reef aquariums today. Blue voodoo, green planet, German blue polyp acro and purple plasma. Also I'm starting to see noticeable growth from my acros in less than 2 months! Love this tank. I had a battle with ich where all three of my tangs looked like they'd be dead within hours. Everything's recovered and I'm happy to say I haven't lost anything yet. Oversized uv definitely helped!

Gorgeous setup. I'm planning on getting the S-650 soon. Please tell me more about your cycling process. It is the thing I'm most worried about. I have a bunch of good dry rock, but I'm tempted to get some Cherry Primo LR from RockNReef. But I worry about the cure process and cycling with so much on the rocks. I would assume there is a huge Ammonia/Nitrate spike. What kind of rock and sand did you use and how did you do your cure process. Thanks!

Hi there Salt Creeper,
I will be following along your thread, I will be starting my own documented journey shortly.
I have just got back into the marine hobby, and I have also setup a RSM 500.
In relation to your filter socks, could you please upload a couple of pictures that show how you have set them up. I have the black mechanical filter media that came with the tank, however I would to use the socks instead.

Looking forward to your updates and passing ideas across.

Mike

I am using Filter Socks on my RSM 500. I have the two drain pipes draining directly into the sock in the sump.

Hi salt creeper
Your reef is looking great
I was wondering if you could tell me what t5 bulb combination your using on your s500 and how it's working for you
Thanks

A lovely tank, quality build and from a great tank building company.

I am from Uk and a couple of local reefers have a 500 and 650 and they look good and allow a lot of variety for aquascaping due to depth and width of tank.

I also know a few reefers that cure and cycle rock prior to getting a tank wet so that there is no cycle, good idea that saves time and allows fish from day 1.

Hope all goes well with fish and uv.

Paul
