I have a gorgeous red sea regal that destroyed 3 of 5 croceas I bought from Barry at clams direct last week. He killed them wthin two days. The other 2 were protected in a glass jar,but beleive it or not he got into the jar to nip at them. I gave the two remaing ones away to a freind for safe keeping, but was wondering if anyone has discovered a way to protect a clam from predatory fish so I can take them back???

No hope...its the clams or the fish. It's a shame it has to be this way, but most angels are not safe with clams.

thanks for the feedback. I assumed ther was no hope but I just wanted to check whether someone had a fix for protecting the clams.

adrmd, I am not trying to be critical, but did you read something that said you might be able to do that?

In all my research and discussions I was of the belief, and still am, that the red sea regal is one of the few reef safe angels. It has been well behaved in my reef for over a year, and if not kept well fed will pick on xanthids or a polyp here and there, but well worth it. I thought it might nip at the clam mantle not be as agressive toward the clams as it was. I was surprised.
I was hoping someone had experience. Maybe a different clam species or other way to protect the clams.

adrmd, I'm also did research on the Regal. What I found was it's probably one of the most reefsafe angels, but it is a hazard to clams, sponges and some LPS. The clam thing made me forget about getting one.

thanks again for the feedback. I knew i wasn't crazy about it being reefsafe, but i also know that their are great variability in individual fish behavoir even within the same species. Barry from clams direct thought the hog sfish may have been bothering them but he didn't even look.
Oh, on another note. I bought some carribean sponge (orange) specifically for the angel to eat when I first got him and he didn't take to it so quickly but eventually devoured it. (i'm told they don't prefer carribean sponge). Its just that he got these clams within the frist day. I was surprised. I obviosly have to forget about having clams in this tank, but i thought someone might have tried something ingenious like see through deer netting or a glass lattice. or put it near my bTA for protection or real close to the top of the tank almost waterline so it harder to reach. anything
