Red Sea Skimmers

I have one and thought it was okay. Then my pump burnt out when I was out of town and now I just purchased the ps 75. I think this will be more efficient and for half the price I couldn't argue. I guess it really depends how much of a load you have and what you think will be sufficient. Although many people despise these cheap skimmers and say they don't work, I think it is just pride talking. Someone posted a thread about the ps 75 along with other members posting some of their own cheap skimmers with mods. Great thread if you care about not ****ing money away! Or if money is no option deltec wouldn't be a bad choice. Hope that helps.

What is the "ps 75" Is this the smaller size? I dont plan on too heavy of a bioload, but i will be cycling new rock. Bunker

The ps 75 is a hob skimmer, at least that is how I am going to use it because I don't have a sump. The ps 160 would probably be better suited for you tank since yours is a little bigger than mine. Both these are made by odyssea and can be bought from aquatraders.com. If you have the time to read through it, chevegan posted a thread on the "Odyssea needlewheel skimmer" that is a really good thread for the frugal reefer.

Hi there,
I have a prizm pro deluxe on my 75gal. I actually love it! I works quite well...lots of dark skimmate everyday.

Most people will tell you their crap (most of those people probably never owned one).

I think the only downside is that red sea over estimated the skimmer capacity but how do other companies calculate skimmer capacity anyways.

I wasn't saying that they weren't good at all, I was just stating that for the price I think there are other things out there with better value. I know that thread about the odyssea skimmer goes on forever, but the info is well worth the reading time. Several different skimmers are discussed at length so you can decide for yourself based on what you read. Most people end up doing a quasi needlewheel with a dremel and do a mesh mod as well.

The red sea skimmer says it has a 17oz collection cup, is that big or little? I would assume big, but if i am going to be gone for a few days, i would not want it to overflow with goo. Is the red sea quiet, or does it make a lot of noise? how does it work? Never used one... do you just hang it on the back of tank and turn it on, or does it come in a million pieces that you have to finkle with to get running correctly? Bunker

Hi bunkerboy,
Your inital post says Prizm pro deluex but are you thinking of buying the regular Prizm. The regular Prim has the 17oz collection cup, which is rather small and does not have the drain valve like in the prizm pro version (40oz collection cup).

I have both the prizm (on my nano), and prizm pro (on my 75). The pro is allot quieter.

In either cases, they need to be assembled...not very hard.
