Red Sea Test Kits

If the Red Sea nitrate test is at 4ppm on the low side and on the high side it reads 2ppm is that okay ?

Your tactics confuse me. I am assuming you mean that the 4ppm is on the high side and 2ppm are on the low side. If that is the case the numbers are fine. It does depend on what you are keeping in your tank to a point. SPS tanks like very low nitrates but still require some to maintain colors in the SPS tanks. SPS guys can weigh in here but I would shoot for 4ppm or less in SPS only tanks. Softy and LPS tanks typically like a little higher nitrate levels say 5-10ppm. These are just rough targets. You start getting 10ppm and higher algae will love you and 40ppm or higher fish will start to suffer. These are just rough guide lines. I have seen SPS tanks running 20-30 ppm on nitrates that look beautiful. Then like mine I have about 12ppm and have a massive hair algae outbreak. It is generally about stability. Although individual test results are important, taking those results and comparing them to all your other tests along with how your tank is looking and acting gives you the best picture for maintaining your particular tank. Something to remember is that your test results are telling you what is still left in the water. Your tank will use nitrates and phosphates but what is used will not show on tests. It is the over abundance or the unused which shows up in test kits.
