red slime algae

Hello everyone,

I woke up this morning to find that our tank has had a slime algae outbreak through the night. There was a power outage here yesterday for about 4 hours and I placed some battery powered air pumps in to keep oxygen in the water and stirred it up every so often, does anyone know how to get rid of this stuff. Is it a bad idea to try and blast it away with a turkey baster...

gets some Chemi-Clean. Red slime will be gone in 48 hrs.! All of it. Stuff is amazing.

Ayuh, Chemi Clean is awesome. I generally don't reccomend treating chemically, but if your tank has been set up for awhile and has been doing well, this tuff works great.

Give some thought to solving the real problem, which is either excess nutrients or lack of flow in your tank. Quick fixes in this hobby may appear to work in the short term but can have detrimental effects (like killing friendly life/bacteria) you might not want.

Stirring it up is a bad idea, you don't want to do that, because it will just spread it around. Chemi clean works good I heard, I'm receiving it today from Marine Depot in my last order I placed. Waiting for it to arrive still, so I can treat my tank, as I am having a red slime algae problem right now.

As cw150 find the problem that is causing the red slime... I had phosphate levels too high, So I also order some Phosban to add into my filtration, Their are other factors that could cause this too, as I have done some research,

It can be cause by not enough flow in your tank,

your bulbs could be giving off the wrong spectrum and they would need to be replaced,

you could be over feeding your tank, I have started target feeding my fish to make sure that no food hits the bottom of the tank and only feed them tell their done eating.

Also remeber to put in an air stone before and during the chemi clean treatment if you go that route, as chemi clean depleats the o2 levels in your tank greatly. I'll post results of the treatment as the next few days pass on my thread for my tank if you want to click on my little red house.
