Red Slime

so yeah.... it happened.. its nasty ugly..

my commitment to rid it seems to be working, water changes, cutting back on light.

If I add the chemiclean to what i am doing above, it will help or hurt? I understand that I need to get the underlying reason for the outbreak under control but my numbers are as follow:
Ammonia:0
Nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Ph 8.1
Cal: 410
mag: 1300
Temp is about 80/81 maybe

Any ideas??

i dont like using chemicals to cure things, its only a band-aid. what type of test kit are you using.

+1

Overfeeding, insufficient skimming (or none) or water you're putting in has TDS > 0. Or combination of. You need to figure out which. I'm 7 years in and pretty sure I still overfeed.

I agree with the advice not to use chemicals to kill cyano. If its a new aquarium then a cyano bloom is something normal.Cyano will dissapear when the green hair algae will take its place and after a while the GHA too will slowly dissapear when the tank will become mature. What happens is that the rocks and sand are leaching phosphates that feds the cyano and GHA but after a while the rocks and sand will get covered in a thin layer of calcium from the water that will stop the phosphates from leaching.Let the nature to follow its course.

I would not use a chemical again for red slime. It worked great!..... but it left me with an unbalance in my tank that let Dinoflagellates shortly after multiply and totally made my tank a mess for 7 months or so. I'll rather deal with Cyano any day than Dinos again. Never again in my tank. I'm sure many have used it with great success but I did not have a good experience with the aftermath of it. I blame my initial red slime outbreak on heavy use of the Selcon food additive.

I would keep doing what you are doing with the water changes and lights. Also if you are feeding pellet or flake I would switch to frozen foods. My best factor in beating red slime in the long term was to switch to frozen food. Flake and pellet food is super concentrated so its easy to over feed. Frozen food you can actually feed much more in comparison to flake or pellet. I would feed all frozen until it gets under control.

I had the red slime pretty bad take a look

I use an API test kit. The one you drop the chemicals into the water and wait. My LFS uses the same one, which is why I got it.

There could still be nitrates and phosphates in your tank API isn't a low range test kit. Salifert or Red Sea is better is better. It has a lower range

I def think I overfeed. haha I say my fish always look like they are starving.. so guessing that is my issue for sure. I use RO water.

Yeah right now I use flake food, I will switch and see if I can ease up on feeding. I know I over feed.
