Red Slime

Last week I took some rock out of the tank and probably disturbed the substrate just a bit. Now I see some algae building up on just a couple of frag rocks near the substrate and on the plastic frag shelf near the top. It's a real dark maroon color and have a few strands of hair waving from it. Di you think that it maybe a CYANOBACTERIA BLOOM. What should I do to control this before it gets out of hand...

Everything looks to be in order, with the exception of ammonia just a bit high.
ph-8.4
ammonia-.25
nitrates-0.0
nitrites-0.0
phosphates-0.0

If it looks like this yes it is..mine never got any worse than this and went away on its own..my readings were all good too. Wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to cover a lot of stuff up.

The picture doesnt show the color 100% how it really looks.

When I had it, I would try to get as much of it out of my tank as possible. I then cut down on feeding, and shorten my light on time by an hour. Helped till my fuge could catch up.

I would siphon out as much as possible whenever you see it! It will spred by little pieces floating off, but just keep at it and you'll get rid of it. I get flare ups once in a while when I stir up the sand and not siphon off the debris. I guess increased flow helps as well.

ya i had it bad increase flow less light water change water change water change did i say water change i got it when i got lazy and let my nitrates get too high after $60 in salt and lots of water changes its going away. I think the phosban helped too. I dont siphon my sand i let my clean up crew take care of that ammonia is bad you shouldnt have any probably because you stirred up the sand.

I will try some water changes first....If that doesn't do it, ya think I should use some of the red slime powder treatement I have seen at the LFS?

I had a terrible problem with cyano for about a year. I used Red Slime Remover from Ultralife and worked like a charm. I saw it starting to come back a couple of weeks ago, but I cut back on feeding 20% and looks like it has receded.

i have a box of the Ultralife red slim remover if you need some Sohal ..

Murph ..stop over and get it bud

Thanks Murph, I do have some Ultralife I got with a tank buy a while ago but never had the need for it. I am just afraid to use it, and any other additives for that matter. I would hate to wipe anything out---ya know? (the Ultralife was going to be my last resort but don't want it to get out of hand either...

I used chemiclean on a fish only system without any issues, and it wiped it out. It says that it is reef safe, but I haven't had to use it in mine (knock on wood).
