Red sun coral

My LFS had a sun coral labelled "rare red sun coral". The polyps were retracted but, sure enough, the flesh was red and not like the typical sun corals I'm used to. I was told that the polyps are red and the price was okay so I bought it. Is anyone familiar with a red-polyped sun coral? Is this a common color form?

There are red colormorphs of Tubastrea, but they are pretty rarely available. The only caution I can give is that there are people out there dyeing Tubastreas, so keep a close eye on it. Make sure it gets fed pretty heavily just on the off chance that it was dyed (if thats the case, itll be stressed out and will need heavy feeding to recover). Hopefully it doesnt matter and you have a beautiful, real specimine (in which case.. Im jealous.. I want one... lol)

Yes I've heard of them

I just got one polyp of a sun coral that the flesh is read but the feeder tentacles are yellow/orange. Very nice contrast, and has a great appetite. It does need a little bit of TLC though. We've had it for over a week and haven't noticed a color change as if it were dyed. Hopefully it's not :)

Could be a year before you could tell. Still if anyone has frags PLEASE let me know. I keep a lot of these non-photosynthetic corals.

I'll see what I can do with pics. I can probably take them, it's getting them on here that I don't know how to do! I'll have to see if my hubby can help me.

It's only one head right now, and there's quite a bit of skeleton showing, the flesh doesn't come all the way out of the skeleton yet, like I said, it needs some TLC. The suppliers for one of the LFSs tossed it in for our LFS guy as a freebie, but it's not that great of a deal for him because he's got to remember to feed it. Since it was such a small piece he threw it in with our stuff for us when we went Christmas shopping and brought home a few other things. Hopefully all goes well!

Cool. :-) Lucky you. Take good care of it. I hope it comes back well for you. Good luck.

Jon

Thanks! I hope it does well too. I've always thought they were pretty neat little critters. I'd love to see this one healthy and thriving!

Those reds are fantastic!
I am curious... what and how are you all feeding your sun corals?
Oh, and when??
thanks a bunch,
Deb

Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, squid and silversides. I feed mine about 5 times a week and do bi-weekly water changes...I see babies growing on the bottoms of the yellow suncoral and babies growing like trees on the black. As I type this mine are taking a "sh*t" :)

Yours will eat silversides? I bought some because I swore someone said they ate them, but haven't fed any yet, but I forgot where I read it.

Where do you get your squid? Is it a frozen fish food or something you got from your grocery store.

I dice up the silversides and try to feed each head. The Squid I get from my job. San Fran makes it in cudes. I sometimes buy fresh shrimp from the fish market and feed them also.

I feed mine mysis shrimp and zooplankton that is in a jar in the fridge (it's easier sometimes than trying to distribute a cube of mysis to things that aren't hungry yet).

I feed mine during lights on. We usually turn the lights off before we go to bed and I don't want to wait to go to bed. It's learning to open up more quickly during the day, but it hasn't opened fully yet. I peaked at it last night after we should have been sleeping and it was fully open and beautiful! At first I couldn't tell what it was!
