Red Tide?

idk I went on google earth last night and it was definitely still there but idk how often that is update either...

LOL I don't know. I have to be a good girl or somebody might not take me to the beach anymore 
!!! For the last year, everytime we've gone to the beach we go seining, lug water to and from the hotel, have air bubblers, I search for critters in gross seaweed etc. While my children do love that, I think I'm burning out the hubby who isn't the beach fan I am...but maybe I can hide the seine under the bedliner of the truck and sneak it down, get him drunk and passed out, and then WE can all go seine 
!!!!

ARtificial reef? How deep? Do people charter boats there? Hadn't really thought about going boating but what you said...sounds great!
Now onto another topic sorta ... are there places shallow enough anywhere in the area to snorkel? I guess I need to get certified in diving. I've snorkeled in the Bahamas and Virgin Islands years ago. Being a non-stop baby factory for several years, it's been a while since I've been out like that. We're probably going to go to Ft. Desoto Beach for a day. I assume there are places there to snorkel.

its worth it to get certified i got certified when i was 12 and never went lol but now that im 17 and can go out with by myself with friends,im taking a refresher course and probably getting an advanced certification soon. i never went because i got it done with my parents and my mom couldn't take the pressure on her ears...

I was out at Egmont last weekend - big tides running..HUGE schools of Bluefish passing thru Im talking 10000+fish covering a couple of acres. Amazing to see. Also schools of big Ladyfuish jamming thru real fast. Saw some debris at the boat dock - from the tide..but the water was fairly clear.

i have heard there is some good snorkling on the sounth end of egmont you can take a ferry out there from ft desoto its from 11 to 3 pm and its 15 bucks and its beautifull out there.
also my friends told me about a good spot just off the east side of the skyway on the rocks is awsome too.

Yes...the south end has some old structures that have washed into th Gulf and now sport a nice collection of gorgonians and fish schools. I've seen lots of snapperr and even a 4' Barracuda down there. Water in early summer is usually very clear...and about 12-15 deep at the structures. The south end is also a vast bird sanctuary, talk about noise..amazing when you get thousands of birds together in one place. Its also cool to stop and watch them feeding in the tidal flows from the Bay into the Gulf. The north end drops to about 80-90' and has very fast currents along the ship channel, with excellent Tarpon fishing in summer. The east side has a good artificial reef about 500 yards off, made up of old construction debris..but full of snapper...Hmmm good eatin!
If you get a chance to get off the boat and onto the island, its a wonderfull walking history tour of old Florida, and the military base that was there. Lots of old brick streets and buildings, definatley worth the walk!
