This is weird, I sent a message to Christina to try and find out what is going on. Maybe I am going to have to learn how to set up web sites so I can understand all this stuff. myscmas.com has sent me to three or four different sites before it finally started sending me to our site.

I think someone is playing around. myscmas.com did direct it to the RMRC board earlier. Now it goes to the club site.

You know what I find funny here? Someone from another club is playing around forwarding and having lots of fun online. Meanwhile we are organizing a kick A** frag swap, bringing in vendors and speakers from California, building our own frag tank, buying a PAR meter and having membership grow daily.
All with no membership fee's, no fee's to hear our presentations.
NO FEES FOR SELLING FRAGS AT OUR SWAP, and generally kicking everyone else's reef A**.
So I say have fun and go to town with your domain name games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shouldn't jump to conclusions that its a person doing this. I've seen quite a few instances of DNS poisoning. Usually the attacker trying sell something or force you to use their search engine for advertising purpose or information collection. Regardless, its possible that one of the DNS servers being used by the registrar is having issues or has been attacked. If the problems persist, we should notify the registrar of the problem.

As far as cache poisoning there was a recent bind flaw found regarding this (dont ask, I'm a nerd). I doubt this is the deal though. I've got a contact over at One and one and just shot off an email to see whats going on but ten to one it's someone on the east coast (think south caronlina or something such as that) with a registered site that they eventually want to use. It's possible they thought they were doing someone a favor??? who knows. I've worked with several clients and companies that do "content links" when launching a new project site, often pointing a domain at something related pre development to get the search engine coverage and help get the domain out there. they typically do this with permission and point to most often another site they own though.

From looking at the MX records and such it's on a commodity host, one and one typically uses cpanel and by default has catch all to the default email, you may try hitting webmaster@ or something random with an email.

I spoke with the pres of rmrc and they don't know anything about the crazy wandering link. I think it is like Joe said, and some one is working on a site, or they want us to buy the name. Either way, I don't think we should worry to hard especially since it redirects to our web site.

Someone I know has been investigating this, a little, and pointed out that coloradoreefs.org is the only domain of its type registered. There is no californiareefs.org, no floridareefs.org, etc. That kind of rules out one of these domain name squatters taking the name so that you would buy it from them.

It is someone with an axe to grind against SCMAS, and I can only think of a few that hate us that bad.

It is interesting to note, the redirect now points to our site and the coloradoreefs.org give you the "error 403" message.

I am realy interested in what J finds out from 1 on 1.

Unfortunately I cant get much information out of one and one due to policies (yaay for terms of service). I did manage to get a little info as to the site is on a shared host with a real basic plan. We do have options though, providing the scmasclub.com site is on a host we know (I think I heard something to this affect). All we would need to do is make sure something is in the TOS at that host (or do a policy on the scmasclub.com site) regarding intelectual property. Then it's just a matter of calling in a complaint, would probably end up with a simple cease and desist and nothing ventured nothing gained.

To be honest, I really think it's another club out there who jumped on the domain to fit (south carolina? hrmm) and simply is not ready for rollout, let them forward, it's not hurting anything so long as we find a way to let people know the real URL.
