Reduce overflow sound

A triangular overflow there in my 135g tank, and it makes a lot of water gurgling noise. How to reduce the noise?

Start by drilling about a 1/4 inch hole in the top of your u tube at the top
Thanks Tazzy. Made the hole. Water level went up a bit. But the U tube is still little bit above the water level and it still makes noise, less than before though.

The pipe appears to be to low. From the pic it looks as if the air hole is even or below the water line.

So I should make the vertical pipe longer? So that the water level in the overflow is flush with the rest of the tank?

I would make the water line just below center of the horizonal pipe on the U.

The one on the left shows where the water line should be and the one on the right is the backup in the event the main were to get clogged. This should help alot.Overflow-2.jpg

Awesome. Thanks.

If the noise continues and it sounds as if it is coming from splashing in the sump, make the flex hose longer and put a big U into it. I had to do that with mine. Good luck.

Flowing into the sump is quiet. Its just at the mouth of the tube. Will adjust the pipe and see.

#1 A single drain like that is always going to be a noise issue unless you slow the flow down drastically (which is ok)..
#2 you would be better doing it as a tee like this with a hole in the top..
durso2.jpg

Then you put a valve on the "output" of your return pump to slow the flow of water through the system until it quiets down enough for you..

Thats about all you can do with a single setup like that...

I agree with this. In your first pic the water in the overflow looks to low & it creates a waterfall coming into the overflow box that creates noise. U need the hole in the topto let air in so it doesn’t syphon, but after u drilled the hole the water level in the overflow raised & covered the hole. It probably reduced the noise coming into the overflow box but it will still kick in & out of syphon when the hole gets covered with water. With only one drain u do not want a syphon because they are more likely to clog then a durso.

So essentially u need to raise the standpipe & the water level in the overflow box. The water level in the overflow box doesn’t need to be the same as the tank but I would try to keep it to where it isn’t any more the 1 to 1.5” lower then the top of the overflow. The pic John posted is a exterior overflow box & that tank is actually notched to get the water to the overflow box. That is why they are able to have the water level so low inside of the overflow box. It would be easier to do with a standpipe like mcgyver posted. A durso will only drain so much water & the more water it receives the louder it will be. So u need to dial the return pump in to match the drain.

Most people use syphon drains & it is the opposite to where u dial the drain to match the return pump. So if u read about drains make sure u don’t get them mixed up. Make sure it is a durso that u are researching & not a syphon drain.

Yup, mcgyver is right. I have a Durso on my setup, and it looks exactly like that. Using the tee allows you to use an end cap, which you can use different size drill bits on until you get it silent! Start small, try it. Make a little bigger, try it. If you end up too big or doesn't work, you can just get a new cap. Don't glue any of these fittings, "dry" fit is fine for your drain at that point.

Add second hole here approximately but larger

Also u could try making top vent hole slightly larger

This is how mine is setup and is dead silent

Also adjust water height in overflow so it is almost levle with water coming in this will reduce water splash noise

would adding an airline tube in the hole of that design help with sound like it does others so that you can push it into the pipe and have it in the actual flow?
