reducing ammonia question ...

Other than time, and water changes (one caused a diatom outbreak), is there any other way to bring the AMO level down? Had 1 spike to 1.0 a week+ ago, but has now remained around .25+/- ....

Diatom outbreaks are almost a guarantee with any new tank. Ugly, but nothing to worry about.

Ammonia levels will decrease and become unmeasurable with hobby test kits once the die off is complete and the bacteria in your tank is established. You just need to give it a little more time. If you don't see it going down within the next week or two, try using another test kit. The one you have might not be accurate.

Hopefully you have enough biological filtration to process the NH4 to NO2.

If it gets any worse, an ammonia detoxifier like Amquel or similar will work.

Thanx both ... I knew TIME would cure the ills, but just in case .... Billybeau1 ... I admire your taste in fish ... have a new pal that helped me, so far, with 1 octopus, many baby octos and is tormenting the hell out of a stone crab and a mantis ... he'll get them sooner or later ... I actually call him Picasso and for an older fish that has to be a loner, he eats out of my hand and follows directions after 1 week!! gonna get him his own tank when I am ready for the fishes ...

Thank you. My Picasso also eats out of my hand and actually lets me pet him. Of course this is not recommended but he is the king of the tank. His name is Paco. :)

But my sweetlips is the prize of my FO tank. They are difficult to keep in captivity and Toby (named after the country singer) has been with me for about 4 years now. I've been very lucky. :)

Also, don't panic if you see the trigger laying on his side. Mine does it all the time. He takes about 4 naps throughout the day and lays on his side when he sleeps. :)

:fun5: Thanx for the info ... I only got "something" out ofdesparation with all of the unwanteds I had to catch, especially the baby octo's (some as small as the * on your keyboard ... got him last Sunday around 3:00 and when I looked at him around 9:00 ... I thought I:uzi: the guy!!! ... figured out he was just sleepin (the next day) He doesn't get up till 15 minutes after the lights are on:lmao: ... I'm going to get him his own tank when I'm ready for fish (the LFS (a fred of my pal) finally had to isolate him as he doesn't play nice with others!! Kinda a loner like me, that;'s why we get along so good ..
