reducing amount of live rock?

right now my 55 gal has at least 100 lbs of live rock that ive had in there for the duration about a year and a half.now i understand that with lots of live rock-good flow and a protein skimmer you dont need a filter.but ive always had those and a filter.with a filter can i reduce the amount of rock to open the tank up for swimming room at bit more and to place more corals in.

I would say yes. Most try to stock their tank of live rock at 1lb per gallon.
