reef collection in costa mesa!!!

IMHO, all prices reflects the expenses to runa LFS. Like myself, I am sure that Frank have a very HEAVY burden with overhead costs, hence alittle higher price. But if the quality is there, that is what really matters. His location is prime in that area also, and belive or not, he will make his share and his own customers for being in that location. Reefcentral reefers are just spoiled overall, and because of all the trades and frag swaps, trust me when i say this, no matter at what prices, us LFS will gain little from the online people. Its been about a year since i have open my store, and i have gotten little response from the RC guys.. 95% of my customers are from new walkins and newbies.

Frank, keep on doing the good job you are doing, keeping high customer service is number one in this and i am sure you are aware of this already.

I went there and the store is nice but the prices are through the roof....I was expecting pricing like the other store...$1600 for an Acan lord made me laugh so hard....Its like we have another tongs! I also went to the guy at the front counter and asked about Frank and how he was doing and the guy said he isnt affiliated with them and made it sound like they let him go or something....It was weird

As for them being tank raised, pledosophy is right. Frank said that they were captive raised. So the dude made a "mistake" in telling me it was tank raised. All is forgiven. I appreciate Franks honest and effort to help!

 That is rad. That is more inline with the customer service I have had at his previous store. I am glad things were made right with you. Props to Frank.

Nicole I disagree with your definitions somewhat. I have always used the terms as

WC a speciment caught in the wild and then sold as is.

CB a speciment spawned and born, and raised in captivity, usually a aquaculture facility with closed systems.

TR a speciment taken out of the ocean at a young age, raised in a tank, then sold once it reaches appropriate size.

Liveaquaria previously had these seahorses as CB raised in the U.S until they were contacted by a group and realized that the seahorses were coming from net pens. They replaced the CB with TR and took off the raised in the U.S.A line.

Well, that is what I mean about the terms becoming polluted. If you ask a breeder, they will usually give the definitions as I gave them. At this point, I wouldn't rely on any term used to mean one thing or that other; I would ask for specifics.

I like what Inland Aquatics has done with the term "Captive Reared" -- I think it's more clear and easily understood. "Captive Raised" would work, too.

IME with large scale professional seahorse breeders the definitions I gave are what is widely used. They are also the definitions I used when I was breeding seahorses. I have more experience with seahorses then anything, it's kind of my forte.

Never thought they would vary with different species and speciments. Crazy !

To me it was always logical, captive bred meant that they were actually bred in captivity. Anyways, good to learn something new.

Good to know.

"How long are they to stay in quarintine? A month or so?"

Steve -

I'd keep them in quarantine for six weeks - keep a close eye on your parameters, especially if you're feeding them 4 times a day! You might want to also drop an airstone in the quarantine to help with 02, and to stir up the water a bit.

It is a nice store and we are lucky to have so many great stores in north/central Orange County! I suspect we must have one of the highest concentrations of LFS in the country. I hope they all do well, but in reality I think their are to many in our area for them all to stay in business. I hope I am wrong.

Imho we have 2 types of fish stores. Quality and crappy.
In this hobby guys if you havenââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t figured it out already you get what you pay for??? Do i like paying high prices of course not but would I pay more for something that is in better condition and quality?? Yes I would. Beggars cant be choosers.

Also 95% of the time if you win a customer on price youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll loose a customer on price???

What ever happened to PETown

My 2 cents

Petown was officially sold to Len, who opened it in Tustin as Window to the Sea. If you call the Petown number you get Len.

There are a ton of stores locally. I think the ones that will survive have a good web market as well. Like Jeff's or Window to the Sea. As a business expanding your market is most always a good thing.

I made a trip down to the new store this weekend, it is WAY bigger than their old HB store. I was charged incorrectly for my purchase at the register but I caught it before walking out. The difference was charged back to my card and I don't think the girl did it on purpose. Regardless, I would shop there again when down by south coast plaza. And next time I will check my receipt for sure.

i think Window, bought the tele number but not the business window dosent look anything like petown.

I agree.

yah i went to check them out and bought a starfish.. it was fairly priced but i saw some of the other stuff. WOW. not cheap. they do have a big place and nice display though! maybe thats why... they need to do it to afford all the maintenance

Pet Town was forced out of busniess due to the demo of their building. They opted to sell their equipment, and phone number to many, Len was just one of the many who purchased parts of Pet Town.

They said that the cost was to high to relocated and opted out.

Yeah I have to agree here as well. I was shoked at how bad that store looks. They had nothing for sale and the stuff they did was realy expensive and was nothing great. I decided to drive down to fish200 instead since I knew they where alittle better in there prices and I could buy stuff there. I still remmeber Petown and I think the're will never be a place like that again. I still remember wanting to buy a fish so badly but they did not want to sell it because it was not QT yet. They where so helpfull and would never sell me anything that I did not need.

Reefcollection is a nice store and he does have a nice setup prices are good to okay for the locationa and what you get. I know that the rent in not cheap there especialy now that they will be remodeling the whole shopping center. Best wishes and good luck to Frank. On a side note they do offer a payment plan on there full tank setup, who do you know that will do that for you?

Fish 2000 is now under different ownership and is practically empty ! The new guys seem nice and want to try and make it a better store. I did hear a rumor that they are going to make it a "pet store" rather than just a fish store. I never bought anything there other than some dry stock that I could get a good deal from Frank on... just thought I would save somebody a trip... FYI... the new owner said they would not really be up and running until June or so
