Some say because no bubble plates, no cones, older style pumps that they're outmoded. I like them though.

What do you folks think?

When you "some" (people) does that include anyone who has done actual research or just anecdotal research? ER/RD is a tried and true design, as is Becketts, Venturis, air injection and limewood air stones. As has been stated numerous times, skimming is about matching a volume with the correct amount of air and water. The ER/RD design is solid and performs, bubble plates and cones don't seem to add much to the equation. IMHO the placebo effect is very much in play with newer skimmer designs, "it's the latest thing, it has to be better". Deltec still doesn't offer a cone and only recently added a bubble plate design to their skimmers.

The ER/RD design is still correct, as they match the pump to the volume of the container. I don't really think that is going out of style as it is the proper way. I would like to see them use more efficient pumps, and that may come at some time.

I would say it is a classic design that is correct and simply works.

Love my CS6-1. Considered trying different "newer" designs but then again why? This thing works great and is built solid so I dont see where anything "newer" would result in any better outcome than what I have now. Water quality is dead on perfect as it is. Love my ER!

Only time a Er skimmer does not work correctly is when it is not sized correctly. I would like to see ER/RD offer two or three pumps with there skimmers. I have two types from them Sedra's and Eheim's so I would like too see Tunze , Askol's pumps; powerful and efficient.

they use 2 pumps on the 400 series. and 7-8 pumps on the 2000 and a single reeflo pump on the 4000 series.

i dont know of any tunze models, but i think they have made one using the laguna pump. (not sure if it were custom or a part of their lineup)

+1 well said

Having used many skimmers over the years (ER included) I have to say you hit the nail on the head. Cones, bubble plates etc do offer a slight increase in performance IMO but not enough to justify the added expense. If I were on a budget I would not hesitate to use a ER/RD skimmer. The Reef Dynamics skimmers with Eheim pumps are a good value IMO.
