Classic performance or old technology?
Which AFAIK is a rebranded Resunthey're using eco plus pumps now.
When you "some" (people) does that include anyone who has done actual research or just anecdotal research? ER/RD is a tried and true design, as is Becketts, Venturis, air injection and limewood air stones. As has been stated numerous times, skimming is about matching a volume with the correct amount of air and water. The ER/RD design is solid and performs, bubble plates and cones don't seem to add much to the equation. IMHO the placebo effect is very much in play with newer skimmer designs, "it's the latest thing, it has to be better". Deltec still doesn't offer a cone and only recently added a bubble plate design to their skimmers.
The ER/RD design is still correct, as they match the pump to the volume of the container. I don't really think that is going out of style as it is the proper way. I would like to see them use more efficient pumps, and that may come at some time.
I would say it is a classic design that is correct and simply works.
