reef/invert safe eel?

I bought a pair of G moringas from Tom and highly recommend them. I would buy more from them but they are limited to Caribbean fish. There fish list is updated every Friday.


Sea Life inc may be another option, I've heard nothing but good things. I don't think they normally stock eels but you may be able to request one- http://sealifeinc.net/catalog/contact_us.php
 
ok thank you, now Im going to be keeping it in a 6' 125gallon tank... should I make a PVC "den" for it?

If I should, what kind of lay out is "best"... I was thinking of a kind of pipe "network" under the sand...

There's a fire shrimp, a banded, and a few other randoms in there too.

Adding pvc can't hurt but it is not a requirement like ribbons eels need. I think ample rock work is more important. i have a four foot section of pvc for my moringas which they rarely go into. I don't think my dragon ever went into it. They seem to prefer staying inside the rocks.

Oh ok, I think that I might have had another "change of heart", how many piscivorous eels can be kept in a 6' 125 gallon?

And piscivorous eels most likely won't eat any inverts, right?
not just shrimp...but crabs, snails, or nudibranchs, those sorts of things should most likely be safe with them, right?

Again, I'm sorry for all the some what repetitive questions... I'm just trying to "soak up" all the advise... :)

Fangtooth moray; Enchelycore anatina. Awesome fish but expensive and needs to be kept chilly (68-70 max). I highly recommend them, though.

No prob I'm sure. Likely is the key word here - I would experiment with inverts you aren't in love with before adding ones that you are.

The the 125 plumbed? Can you put a whole bunch of rock (for hiding spots) in it? Use an awesome skimmer? Add two feet of eel for every yes :)
 
I would do two max. When they get big feedings can be a little tricky unless you have some help. As far as size, I think two goldentails would be fine. Get them at the same time and the same size.

Inverts will be safe. I'd advise against the black long spine urchin, they can and will leave spines in the eel.

I'd also look for an Asian market in your area to buy there food- octopus and squid will be much cheaper than at a seafood market.

How expencive are we talkin? and how big?

Well do the eels come in 0 feet? Lol...
Thing is I don't have the tank yet... I'll be getting it in a month or so...
But I will be adding live rock, What skimmer would you recomend?

Thats a good idea, testing them with cheap, expendable inverts... ;) Honistly I never would have thought of that...

I was thinking bout a Fimby(for cost) and a "fangtooth"(Enchelycore anatina) like helicoprion's (but that might depend on the price.)If i'm to get a goldentail, might depend on price too... :/ would that work?

Two would certainly make feeding time easier... feeding sticks certainly help.As far as brands go, stay away from AquaC (I just hate them!) and get a skimmer rated for at least 150 gallons... 200 would be better. Eels produce a lot of waste. 150 or so pounds of live rock doesn't hurt either. I tend to stock heavily, but my filtration is overkill, and I have backup tanks if I see any aggression in new animals. Water changes are a must too.

On anatina - I'm bringing 10 more in... I don't know how much I'm allowed to say on this forum, but the classified section has all the deets. Keep in mind I'm selling them at cost :)
 
Oh cool! You sell fish?!?! I'm still thinking abuot the eel only tank, my parents two fav. fish are the yellow and blue tangs, so I still just might do the one less aggressive eel like Olemiss was saying before... But I don't know if I'd want to risk the lives of such beautyful fish (ugly ones, thats a different story... lol jk) But its a tough choice :/ And with it being my first SW tank witch tank setup do you guys think would be better for me and the fish???

One eel with 2 or 3 big fish and inverts OR 2 eels with inverts?

Nah, not something I usually do, but I do love these guys and no one else has them. I don't get off on being the only one, I was really hoping there were other eel freaks out there that might want one.

Trust me, I want one but as soon as I mentioned a new tank I was given the death stare from the old lady. I just started a new garden eel setup and that took a fair amount of overpriced rocks to buy her approval. I don't think I can afford another trip to the jewelry store and the eel.
 
Hahahahaha... I hear that.The garden eel setup sounds awesome! My girl wants to do a seahorse tank with garden eels, I think that's going to be an upcoming project... I had tanks when we met so she knew what she was getting into.
 
An eel that is reef safe with small fish or aggressive is the Zebra Eel. They are the most common eel kept in reef setups because they don't eat the small fish. However, the problem with Zebra Eels is the fact that they grow to be 4-6 feet long. About 2-4 inches in diameter. You can check them out on youtube and you will see many of the zebra eel's kept with clownfish. However, I am pretty sure all eels love shrimp :P
