reef keeping 101 ideas

The meeting is for beginners, its a 101 for this meeting. The "growing" ideas are something that could be a possible meeting for next years board to address. This year is all booked up.

With todays information age, really almost any question could be answered in a few clicks it seems.

This meeting was requested by the club, so thats what were gonna try to give you guys.

I sent a note to Mike (prez) suggesting the idea of a panel of experts where folks could come with questions & ask the experts. Go around the room giving everyone a chance to ask first question & if there's time, get a second chance.

Stay on topic here guys, thats a great idea for another meeting Dave, but this thread is for the 101 meeting.

3 Bulbs shifted so far red they are hitting the frags with UV.

This is a new one to me. How can the color temp of a bulb cause UV to make it through the glass shield? Having the wrong color temp maybe, but it is not going to magically cause UV to pass through glass.

Was this directed at me?

I guess so but its also for everyone, were not looking to turn this into a big drawn out production. Theres not enough help to do that in this short of time. Its just your plain old speaker meeting with the topic 101 reef keeping, nothing more nothing less.

Stay on thread?? What is "off" thread about having a panel of resident experts fielding questions from the floor, giving everyone a chance to ask at least one question? Oh well...

That has nothing to do with this months meeting. Thats all, good idea for another month.
I guess I'll explain the meeting again
A few board member will be discussing/giving a presentation on reef keeping 101 topics. Following the persentation there will be a q and a

All I was looking for was a fe good topic ideas, not another way to have the meeting or other meeting ideas. Just looking for topics, does that clear it up? Hope so :)
I think we have enough choices now anyways
Erik

From the list of basic 101 topics. Does anyone want to put together a presentation for the club and give it at the meeting on March 21st? I am thinking in the line of 3 to 4 speakers with 15-20 minutes worth of presentation time. I will be providing a projector and laptop for any type of word or powerpoint presentation someone may want to provide. If we don't get a lot of support from the members on this. I suppose we will pick a few topics that were provided and run with those.

I could put something together about plumbing drains. like dursos, stockman, herbie method etc... There seems to be a lot of confusion and interest in that lately.

At Burgman's request I could do my talk on "Do Fish Feel Pain ??"

JUST KIDDING !!!!!!

Great suggestions by all.

I'm fairly new member. Is it ok to bring a guest to the mtg? I have a friend who will be getting into reef keeping. This mtg would be very good for him. I'm sure he would be a future member when he does get things going.

You do not HAVE to be a member to attend most meetings. If there is anyone that wants to check it out before joining they are welcome to come and see if they would like it or not. You can bring anyone you want especially if they might be a future reefkeeper and member.

There are some occasions where there is a fee or it may be "members only" to participate but you could still come out to watch.

Thanks, I'll probably bring him along.
As far as topics for the mtg, did anyone suggest supplements and additives? There are allotta things that could be discussed within this subject.

OK see you there.

I think that was brought up but this is about the very BASIC things you need to know to keep a reef tank. I think things like supplementation and additives are more for the beginner but someone who has already mastered the very basics.

In my opinion you would need to decide what type of drains and return plumbing you would want before you ever have a tank so that's why I made the offer to explain the different types of standpipes and drain configurations on the market right now and how easy it is to DIY them.

When I mentioned the "herbie method" online I got several PMs and a couple of questions posted in the thread so I thought it was a basic topic that had much interest.

IMO we could have a 2 hour discussion on any ONE of the topics mentioned especially skimmers. There are so many schools of though out there and everyone has their favorite. Most of the reefers I have met are very busy trying to justify why the brand of hardware they just bought is the absolute best possible and it sometimes gets in the way of them seeing the big picture or that there may be another, easier, cheaper, mor energy efficient way to do what they are trying to do. The most important thing I could ever recommend in this hobby is LISTEN to EVERYONE's opinions but, in the end, form your own opinions.
