reef octopus 6000 ext level unstable

I've been running a reef octopus 6000 ext skimmer for about 8 months now, and notice from time to time the water level drops by 4-5 inches randomly, then will go back to normal later, sometimes within minutes, sometimes hours. I have it on a manifold that I haven't made any changes to when this happens. I've also tried a separate feed pump that solely supplies the skimmer, but still happens.

Any suggestions or experience with this issue on an external skimmer?

Also the output is half out of water in the sump, so I don't see any weird backpressure issues causing the problem.
