Reef Octopus XP-1000SSS

I have a XP-1000SSS on my holding tank and it's in 8 inches of water and performs great. The gate valve is underwater. I've seen people mention that it overflows if the gate valve is submerged but I haven't had a problem.

I adjusted my water level to 8 inches and boy what a difference it makes...yes, the gatevalve is underwater, but the skimmer does not overflow. Seriously, does it make a difference. Nice frothly boil

My pump decided to conch'd out on me. I dunno what happened, it all of sudden just stopped working. I contacted CoralVue and talked to David over emails. He was quick with responses and unfortunately the pump still wasnt working. I gave him my address and he is sending me a new on on Monday. Although octopus is out of commission until the new pump arrival, my ER is back up and running and man what a difference the Reef Octopus is to the ER. Much more foam with the Octopus.

I just wanted to post to mention the great customer service. Hopefully the new pump will have no problems.

BTW...

Other bubble blaster owners, could you tell me if your pump vibrates or not? when my pump stopped working, it gained a pretty significant vibration. I assume thats why the impeller doesn't work properly

These pumps seem to work or not So hopefully this will be the last of your problems. I have heard of a couple of other people with similar problems.

yea..it's doing really well. I've kept many tangs in my 65g, when they get to big I take them out, I recently just had a 5-6" hippo in there with it and they got along just fine. I gave the hippo to a friend of mine who had a 125g.

had the blue tang for about 3 years, and I've had the purple a little over a year

I have the xp-1000sss on my 45 cube, and its awesome, big CV supporter here also, I am using the water blaster 4000 as my return, and have the xp-5000 on my 300g.

1000 after about a week

I have a RS-80 in my 90 gal. reef and i am thinking to upgrade because i am having issues with nutrients. Did you consider or evaluate with the Octobus against the ATB 840besides of the extra cost ????
Thanks in advance...

no..i purposely went this route because of the price. I like this skimmer so much...if I go with this tank that I might get (250g+), I will get another XP, probably either the 3000 or 5000.

I have the xp-1000sss and it produces tons of foam and is very quiet. I do not have any vibration after a couple of months.

I was all set to purchase the 160 but now seeing this I am not sure. I hope somebody will do a comparision of the two.

t4zalews - please keep us up to date on how the skimmer is working for you. Will be following along.

I'm thinking that there's going to be very little buyer's remorse with either purchase.

DJ- I ended up going with the SWC 160 mainly becuase I got a deal to good to pass up and I have abolutely no buyer's remorse. It has been running just as advertised and expected. So I am very happy with my choice :bounce3:

Although I still would be interested in seeing a head-to-head comparision of the two. But you are right, I think either one of these and you really can't go wrong.

I think the only real factor between the two is sump depth. I ended up choosing the Octopus because I only maintain 6" of water in my sump. For those who keep it deeper the SWC is probably the better choice.

yea i got mine when they came out from reef specialty, it was back ordered and i had to wait....its a great skimmer except for my pump also "froze" up i believe it is excess calcium or something that locked up the impeller. i had to dig the crud out and then it worked fine. i hope it doesnt become a every other month issue.

Ive found that running this skimmer more on the drier side really pulls out a lot more gunk than running it wetter. Does anyone else feel this to be so?
