Reef safe fish

so I have a 55 gallon cubed tank that is set up for reef with a few fish. Tank is cycled and ready to go. Need some suggestions on reef safe fish to add. Would love to see pics to if you have them.:beachbum:

They can be aggressive in small tanks like my 20 gallon. It does get along fine with my rainford goby so far, but I have only had it for a day....so that may change. I think that it would be a good community fish in a 55.

Any tang in a 55gal = bad idea.

I'd stick to smaller fish in a tank that size... clowns, gobies, blennies, wrasse etc. What have you already got in the tank?

jen jen,

so far nothing is in the tank at this point. Would be starting off fresh. I am thinking of starting off with two and see how it goes from there.

Wrasses are always good. A two spot hogfish is nice, and if you really want some color and personallity pygmie angels are awsome. Well at least to me they are. Good luck.

Thanks. I have been looking into Wrasses. they seem to come in a variety of different colors etc....never saw a pygmie angel, i will look it up. how about a flame angel? Heard they sometimes nip at corals.

All angels are basically a hit or miss. Some behave more than others. I've had a flame angel in my sps dominated tank and it never nipped at anything. I've also had a golden angel that behaved well.

I just added a couple of Bangai Cardinalfish as my first intros. Shy for day one. Now they are already coming out. Didn't want to do the Damsel thing.

The only thing you can determine while they are at lfs is if they are eating. When you bring them home its a new ball game. We have rocks in our tanks and that means territory. Every fish wants to have their own part of the tank. Ive had several dwarf angels in my tank with no problems at all they all got along well. Just keep them well fed.

Wrasses are great for color and active swimmers... my two most recent additions to my 60 gallon were a Canary Wrasse (also known as Yellow Coris Wrasse) and a Clown Fairy Wrasse (also known as Solar Fairy Wrasse)... both get along great (swim together, eat together, etc.) and don't bother any of the other fish.

Another fish I have in my 60 gallon is a Starry Blenny... very cool fish that eats algae in the tank and has a great personality with a unique shape and look.

I'm also going to be getting a Flame Angel (which is a type of dwarf angel), which some people will say is NOT safe to put in a reef. But others will report success (most often they are people that feed their tanks 2+ times per day and have algae growth in their tank or add nori as a supplement). You can decide whether you think its a calculated risk or not...

I think most of the common suggestions have been made. Gobies, Blennies, Wrasses, Clown Fish (Osc or Perc varieties prob best). I really like my Cardinal but they are not very exciting for some first fish. Banghai same thing but what is good is they will stay out in the open, generally, where was some of the others will tend to hide by nature. Also many of the Gobies, Bleenies and Wrasses will jump, so you will need to seal off jumping routes. The 'Tang Police' will say no tangs but I think you could buy a small Fox Face and be fine for quite a while. Pygmy Angels, Coral Beauty and Flame Angel, not the biggest ones. Just go to Drs Foster and Smith and follow the Live Aquaria link for many pix. HTH

Wow....let me first thank all of you for the great responses. You guys really gave me something to think about. Don't have a cover right now so I might have to hold off on any wrasses until I have a cover. I think the characteristics I am most interested in are color, personality, and unusualness. I will check online on some reputable sites and post what I find.
