is there a trigger that can be kept in a reef with snails, small fish, ect.? i have heard blue throats are reef safe but can they be kept with a clean up crew? also is a blue throat and a blue chin trigger the same thing?

yes, they are the same. the males have the bluethroats and the yellow margined fins. I've kept them for long periods in a reef with standard cleanup crew and a flotilla of peppermints for aptasia control with no problems.

Bluejaw, sargassum, pinktail, and crosshatch are IMO the best bets for reef-safe triggers. All these species are planktivorous triggers, making them a much better reef companion. Always remember that all fish aren't alike though and you could always get one of these that ends up damaging your inverts. Just be careful and keep a watchful eye on the new addition for the first week or so.

I've also seen a few clown triggers in reef tanks, but that's more of a gamble.

this makes me want to go buy a niger trigger or blue throat.
I've seen one blue throat in a reef tank, it was a 210 loaded with various corals. did not bother anything.

I would do Sargassum or Bluejaw....Niger may be "reef-safe", but they make large aggressive adults; Small, passive fish be advised.

I have a pink tail triggerfish in my reef with others who are smaller than he and he never had a problem. These trigger love to re-aquascape the tank so be prepared. They do no harm to the corals except move them around.

My Niger eats every crab I put in his tank. My puffers never bothered the crabs but as soon as I added the Niger Trigger, they were all gone. He can't bother the turbo snails because they are too big so thats all thats left :(

Fish personality is hard to predict, i used to go to a LFS that had a niger trigger in its monster reef setup for a long time. But then i have also seen niger triggers eat all kinds of snails and crabs. Its a risky purchase with a niger but i think the bluejaw is pretty safe.
