Reef Tank Stinks?

You can run some carbon and that will help. However, there is a reason for it to stink. Overfeeding, disturbing the sand bed too much or something is dying in the tank. Some say it could be a sign of some kind of algae outbreak or biological filter is not sufficient. Normal salt water doesn't stink or have an odor. The only time I noticed mine having an odor is when cycling my tank with a dead shrimp, so yeah it smelled pretty bad at first and got better as the tank cycled. It wasn't overwhelming, but my filter socks and poly-filter stank pretty bad.

I get a saltwater marsh smell when I change water or move things around, but it goes away in a few hours. Like ou8me2 said, run some carbon. It will help. Maybe a dead turbo snail. You may want to add some blue legged hermits to your CUC.

I get the saltwater marsh smell also during water changes, but it goes away shortly after that. The only other smell I get is when the skimmer cup needs to be emptied. That stuff will make you gag. You might want to check for something dead in your tank.

The only time I get a smell is when I open the the stand under the tank and then it's only the saltwater marsh smell. The skimmer smells bad but as long as the cup is covered I don't notice it.
