Hello all

This is my first marine tank. Bought a Red Sea Reefer 170.

Will try and give as much details as possible regarding the tank and sump itself.

For a really good youtube video on the Reefer 170, Vividaquarium does a complete build from scratch.

Here goes:

The only Red Sea dealer in Hong Kong

Pickup tank and cabinet. Heavy and its only a 170 too!
Both were packed very well.
Cabinet & accessories flat packed.

Sump was packed into the main tank, lots of foam padding.

No written instructions, just diagrams.

Plumping and accessories
(sorry if I used the wrong terms)

For DT:
Return pipe
Emergency overflow pipe
Normal drain pipe
Silencer pipe

Sump/Cabinet:
Green flexible return tubing
Emergency overflow pipe
RS adjustable downflow pipe

Single Red Sea 225 Thin Mesh filter sock comes as standard on 170.
Return pipe connector and directional flow
Standard RS sump return pipe connector

I am using the NEWA 2300L/hr return pump (AC)
Adjustable downflow pipe

Connection between DT and Sump pipes

Both the Emergency overflow pipe and the Adjustable Downflow pipe has an O ring which must be pushed up into the DT portion of the piping BEFORE you use the attached screw to lock into place.

Hard to explain but the Vividaqua video shows him doing just that.

this shows the O ring

Use a ziptie or plastic/stainless steel clamp to hold the flexible hose/tube

a lot of the measurement can be found on RS website but for those who are wondering about skimmer space, reactors etc etc

I believe there is a non-RS sock that fits.
RS filter socks:
100 micron Felt sock
225 micron Thin-Mesh sock
225 micron Felt sock

Sump dimensions:

17x17"
height is 14"
skimmer chamber is 12 long x 10 deep

foam sponge is 2" thick

Height of the glass into return chamber is 7 1/2"

Height to top of filter sock is 9"

Return chamber is 12x5" but the float switch hangs down effectively reducing the chamber to just 7x5"

Cabinet spare space

Very little space to the left of the sump

I measure 4 1/2" by 15" due to the door hinge

enough for small reactors or storage

Ran out of saltwater......

temporary solution, heater and pump in tank.

not enough sand

Need to probably zip-tie couple of the live rock just in case

Using 2x Jebao RW-4 pump
Sera 150W heater in sump

breeder box has an Urchin and 2 unidentified shell/morsels

love that first pic of the fish store. Always so interesting to see how things are in different countries.

Space is precious in Hong Kong. Everything is usually stored upstairs, not much displayed.

Its basically one street full of freshwater, saltwater fish shops (20+ shops)

Here is a freshwater fish shop

What an amazing picture.
I can just see the owners face when you ask them to feed the fish before purchase. LOL
