i pulled the trigger on a Reeflo 250 ORCA with the Pro kit. Mike from Reefspecialty talked me into it for my 220g tank with a 80g sump. i have a DIY skimmer which i have no idea about how good it is. I wanted to know if anyone has one and anything i need to watch out for while putting this beast together.

I've done a bunch of reading and all i can really tell you is dial it up slowly as far as the water level. I used their pump for my DIY unit.

Similar but larger. I built mine out of flat stock. Mine is not the gold edition but the baldor motored unit. I'm happy with it. I have not heard or read anything bad about them, which is the reason i went with the pump in the first place.

As an owner of the 200, I can attest to their performance. Resist the temptation to tune it in too soon as they take at least 3 wks to break in. It has to do with the production oils they use in manufacturing. You will also be happy to have the waste container with the shutoff.

Could i shock the system with the skimmer skimming too much? i guess the three week break in time may help the tank ease into the change if there is a risk of shocking the frags with overskimming.

Its theoretically possible to overskim. However, that is not really the inherent risk with the 250 unless your running it on a small tank. Because they coat the acrylic with oil during manufacturing, the microscopic pores absorb oil which takes about 3-4 wks to dissipate. There are nightmare stories of folks that tuned prior to breakin only to come home and find the skimmer went nuts and drained 30+ gallons out of the tank. Given the recirc pump power, it can overflow like none other. That makes auto shut off waste container mighty handy.

As the owner of a 250, what he said. Mine is in the basement and even after letting it break in for 3 weeks, I set it just a little to close to the edge and it overflowed. You won't have as much problem with the pro setup as it has the longer neck, but still use patience. After a full break in (about 2 months), it stays consistant all of the time now.

I would run the wedge wide open. With the Pro kit's extended neck, you could probably get away with 3/4 open. Be patient and don't expect too much skimmate at first. It will more than make up for things once it kicks in.

Ok finally got this bad boy working.

Running now for 48hrs. Like serpentman mentioned have to be careful for the first few days as it can overflow. Mike from Reefspecialty walked me thru the install. Cannot say enough of his customer service. Looked at pictures and called me everyday to make sure i was doing the right thing.

I've got most of the planning done for it.

I think I'm gonna break ground this weekend, and start construction on the fish area.

I'm going to shoot for a closed loop system hooked to an OM 4-way, with two stream pumps for some supplemental flow. We'll see how the drilling goes though. I'm going to order all the hole saws next week sometime.
