ReefNoob's Huge 90 gallon build Thread

Stopping by here.. there are so many build threads and so little time to keep up.. :) I Looks really nice and I like your way you made your stand really fit where it was in the house. I got a mess of wires to deal with too.. :p

Well thanks for looking at mine ;) and tell me about it, I've probably spent four hours total on cable management in this build and I'm still not fully done...

And here's to page 2 ::beer:

Been reading up on lighting lately and am beginning to lean towards three of these:

http://ebay.to/1OElefF

I know ill take hate for this but they seem to be quite effective and are a very low cost option which is best for me....

I have a few doubts about these though:

------->Is the PAR adequate and well spread out?

------->Is the light produced good looking?

------->Will it set my house on fire?? :)

looking fowards to your opinions on these.

For what kind of corals? For LPS / Softies, yes. SPS, probably.

Ehh... it's OK. I'm very picky about my lighting. I'd recommend finding someone/ a local store that has these "chinese LEDs" to view before buying.

------->Will it set my house on fire?? :)
Probably not.

looking forwards to your opinions on these.

FWIW - My approach has been buying used Ecotech Radion's and upgrading them as time / budget allows. If you're quick (like me) you can find them locally from other reefers for $200 - $250 / each used. Then upgrades are available direct from EcoTech.

Well I went with Mars Aqua cause I couldn't justify the $$$$ that some of those fancy lights were costing. (So that is why everyone hates me. lol) Just gave me too much of a heart attack.. Granted you probably get what you pay for.. :( However, I suspect on those high end lights I can't help but think your getting raped a bit there too.

You might want to check out this thread if you want to get some more information. (assuming you maybe haven't already.) Thats sort of what made me feel a bit more comfortable about trying it. For me I only needed one so I guess it wasn't a lot of money down the drain if it didn't work out.

I bought an evergrow it2040 and really like it. Got a really good deal on eBay for a new one. My corals are all growing well also.

That has to be the nicest tank stand I've seen! Very impressed with the look and quality. Neat place for a tank as well.

Update:

I did a lot of maintenance yesterday and will be doing a large water change today. all corals and fish look good and are growing. The kole tang never hides anymore and is always swimming around. So far everything is going well.

Ill take some pictures today.

Update:

I did a lot of maintenance this past weekend, for the tank had begun to show much heavier algae growth and less coral health than before so I went ahead and did a 45 gallon water change and all params are now in check. I also took the time to give all pumps and my skimmer a long vinegar soak and let them run in the solution for about an hour.

All the fish are doing great, shortly after putting the kole tang in i noticed my clarkii rubbing herself all over everything and the tang had some white spots but i did nothing but kept up maintenance and these both went away. I DO suspect that it was a small ich outbreak but thankfully it never got a real foothold.

For the new tang I went to my local foodstore and went to the sushi counter for some nori. After explaining that I just wanted the normal sheets and not sushi to a very confused asian man (probably spent ten minutes miming to him lol :lolspin:) he gave me three sheets for free and took me up to the register. i put them on my algae clip and the tang and my lawnmower blenny (weird) go crazy for it

so yeah that's all that I really have to say for right now but hopefully i can get moving on some more projects and updates after the holidays and when i'm not spending all my money on presents...

Having a great time with this build!

that algae you have to me looks like Cotton Candy algae

Really, you think?I dont think thats it but I'll try to take another picture when the lights on but you might be right. That being said it has begun to be more compact in growth and has a deeper color but does not grow nearly as fast...

Yeah I've read through that entire thread already, had a little free time. I do think that these lights would be great for me and I plan on getting them. thanks for the suggestion though!

I think those are the same lights I'm talking about just under a different name and with the wifi built in. I don't think the wifi is all that needed so I'd rather but the one without it but thanks for the link!

I Did some maintenance again today, and put up the holiday decorations for the tank :), was just a garland around the border but it does look nice.

So i know it has been a while since I updated this thread but to be honest not much has happened, no additions or any real changes to the tank. I did add a BRS carbon reactr that i had lying around on to keep the water a little clearer and I added another light to the fuge area of the sump. Today i purchased the new lights as well as 120 LBS of fine aragonite sand from caribsea. I was really disappointed in the look of crushed coral as a substrate and it really was a nutrient trap, making me have to vacuum it quite frequently. Also the Family wants an engineer goby so we have to give it the right sand... That's going to be one Expensive fish  Hopefully the sand isn't too fine and won't blow around so much, i might have to turn down the flow. So with the new sand expect a rescape and update soon ish.

I also Replaced my RO/DI filters today, my water is so filled with pollutants that i go through filters all too quickly.

So Expect some more updates soon!
