Refractometer advice

I have the Milwaukee digital refractometer and a Sybon refractometer. They both have their issues, but are usually spot on with each other. I find myself using the Sybon more than the Milwaukee.

Conductivity meter for me. I found I was calibrating wrong on my refrac, but "shame on me". Had both, like the conductivity meter the best. Pricey, but I use twice a week to check both the tank and my water change water.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/rhf/index.php pretty good article. But, I have always been an advocate of consistency. Get it where your happy and keep it there however works best for you. The pinpoint meter is super easy for me to use and I like the consistency of it.

Interesting on the Milwaukee. I was always interested in it, but it was pricey.

I like the rea sea refractometer. Notches are definitely larger and easier to read than the sybon. I would've bought the red sea initially if it was available when I got in the hobby.

As for accuracy, just have two different ones by different manufacturers. Calibrate them regularly. You really can't question readings at that point.

Man I've been using an Instant Ocean hydrometer for the past 6 years and haven't had any problems. Really all you're testing for is consistency, you just want your water change water to match the tank water. Does it really matter how accurate it is other than when you first fill the tank?

I know my hydrometer is off by .004, tested it against a refractometer. Easily enough I filled it with ro water and sure enough it read 1.004. Corals are a hell of a lot tougher than what you guys think in my opinion, think about when it rains in a tidal pool or even when corals are exposed on a low tide there's gotta be huge salinity swings.

I've always used the Milwaukee digital refractometer and I have never experienced a problem. I always take the reading three times and 99% of the time I get the same reading each time. I only calibrate when I get a high or low reading from the DT. I do so by filling a test vial with RODI water and letting it float in the DT for 10-15 minutes for temperature acclimation. I calibrate three times as well.
