in this hobby, we use it to determine our specific gravity. it requires calibration before use. i am sure someone else will come along and out-do me with information.
It is used to check specific gravity from which you can infer your salinity level.
It is the most important piece of equipment you'll buy -- don't get one of those cheap swing-arm hydrometers. I did and it "went bad" on me without me knowing it. I was running 1.019 specific gravity instead of around 1.025 s.g. for about 6 months. No wonder my zoanthids curled up and slowly died.
