Refractometor care

What do you do to keep the hinge on the sight cover moving freely? Mine seem to always get gummed up.

I wash mine with RO water after every use. That way, there's nothing to gum it up in the first place.

I think keeping a packet of desiccant in the box is helpful too. The hinge on my last refractometer rusted after about 4 years

We use desiccant in our packaging.
Desiccant is only effective in a sealed bag/container. Once exposed to air, it's usefulness depletes rather quickly. While a good idea to put a bag in with your refractometer, the box is far from air tight, and after a few day is useless.

Our desiccant is stored in a plastic bag inside a 1 gallon can(looks like a paint can). In the bag is a color changing indicator to let us know the condition of the desiccant. We open the can/bag, take only what we need to package an order, reseal the bag/can. So even with a sealed bag inside a sealed can, and that being full of desiccant packs, we never get to use them all before the color changes to show they are ineffective. Building is climate/humidity controlled.
