Refugee from Fox Valley Reefers Club

All I have to say is WOW! I can't believe the number and quality of LFS you all have down here. The Fox Valley Reef Club is basically up in Northern Wisconsin covering the Appleton/Greenbay area. We have about 3 LFS in the area (not counting Petco) and I am pretty sure that even the crappiest LFS here is going to make me drool. How pathetic is that??? I took a job at Motorola here in Shamburg so I am staying here during the week and traveling back to the NorthWoods on the weekends. I do go up to the Fosters and Smith store in Rhinelander (2 hour drive) every so often and I have had great sucess with thier livestock, and I buy all my salt (Reef Crystals) there. I looked at the phone book and about had a heart attack when I saw how many LFS's are within a few miles of my hotel.

A couple of questions... Is it legal for me to become a member of this club as well? ;) Which are the best stores to visit in Shamburg? As you can see from my profile I have a fairly large tank and can support much more bioload. I need, I mean NEED, an Achilles Tang, a healthy one.

A couple of things that aren't fun here are tollways, traffic, and did I mention tollways?

I love your club's forum. A bunch of us up North have a lot of the same things, so I am thinking about trying to get a coral highway going between the two areas. What do you all think about that?

Thank you all,

Lisa

check out beyond the reef a shoping plaza west golf and roselle ed. aquarium adventure is right on golf and roselle.

I hear Beyond the Reef is a huge rip-off. You can check it out for youself though. There is a big sale in Arlington Hts on Saturday at Coral Paracdise. There's a thread here on that.

PM my friend chewal about an Achilles tang. He has one.

I don't see why CMAS would care how many clubs you are a member of, as long as you pay the $15 to join.

We really are blessed to have so many LFS in the area, so you can enjoy looking all of them over....

Congratulations on your new job!

for tollways, get an IPASS on line. Google it. It cuts down your tolls by 1/2. I dont know how much you are using or if it is worth it but check it out.

Thanks for the tips! Tonight I went to 3 stores and my favorite was Beyond the Reef. I thought they were very friendly and I listened to advice they were giving to a few new reefers in the store and it was solid. I put an orange shoulder tang on hold to take back to my reef on friday. I talked to them about my dream fish the Achilles and Chris pointed out something that I hadn't thought of. They are deeper water fish and my lighting and environment is shallow reef and the hallides and achilles don't go together well. I always wanted an orange shoulder as well after I saw them at the Shedd, so I selected her instead.

Today was also the first day I ever saw a Moorish Idol in a LFS. It was doing a lot of twitching that didn't look healthy. Big fish.

As far as coral goes one of the other stores had a great sps frag selection that Beyond the Reef didn't have. This store also had a pink zenia (that I have been flushing) for like $149. What the &*^%?? They also had an anthelia I have (and I have to frag) for that price, WOW! Each of the stores was better than any I have access to so I am very excited!

Thanks for the welcome and I will be joining!

Thanks for the IPass info...I have to get an IPass. These tolls are making me crazy. My boss is in a rental car and he kept blowing the tolls right in front of me. He told me he didn't have enough change and if they wanted the money they would have had an attendant on duty.

Lisa the Jewel on the corner of Roselle and Golf (right up the block from beyond the reef) sells IPASS at the customer service counter

Oceans Floor is less than 15 minutes drive (or so) from Schaumburg - Exotic Aquatics is not very far from there either.

Aquarium Adventure has a lot of neat tank setups to oogle over, but way overpriced IMO

I've never had probs with the few things I've purchased at Beyond the Reef, but some other members have

Coral Paradise is a nice shop and the owner is a real cool guy

Advanced Aquatics is an okay shop too-

Lots o' great places in that neck of the woods.

I say blow off work and just go LFS hoping(spell check)if I was that far north I would have to do that once a month or so even if it was to just window shop

Don't tell the gorgeous Achilles in Jose Dieck's (TOTM in August I think?) tank that it can't survive in an aquarium with MH lighting!

That said, they are one of the hardest most delicate tangs to keep, which is why I have not yet taken the plunge.

Welcome to the area! I hope you're enjoying all the lfs's. Don't give up your dream w/ the Achilles. I have had mine for about a year. He's in my 180 with 3-400watters and is looking even better day by day. In fact, I think he's out-growing my Red Sea Sailfin! He still doesn't eat any prepared foods, but his big ol' belly says he doesn't need to.

you know DJ thats one ugly fish you have I think you should pull it out right now and I will come get it and put him in my tank because I love the ugly fishies :) :) :)

My Achillies is in a 180 w 400w MH too-from what I have read they are a reef crest fish, not a deep water fish. That being said-they are not an easy fish to keep...

Welcome Lisa! I grew up in Appleton and have been in FIBLand for 13 years now. I now act like and drive like a FIB ... I must be one now ;-) We head North to Minocqua many weekends and I'm a regular with Jodi in the fish area at Foster Smith too. I'm just west of Schaumburg and I'm in telecom too. We should meet up sometime and I can show you the stores out here.
