Refugium advice

I have a wet dry that I have taken out the bio balls and I am using it as a my sump. It has only 2 compartments the inlet and the return. My return has my skimmer in it. The inlet is approximately 9x10 inch area. Can I make that area a refugium? I know I would have to get a light. I have a 46 gallon tank with 50lbs of LR and 60lbs of LS. My real question is this.... Is that area to small for a refugium?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Shane

Sure you can make it a refugium. What are you planning on keeping in it? Just macro algae? Or more live rock/sand?

For a cheap refugium light - use a clip on bulb socket and compact florescent with internal reflector, found at lowes, hd, wal-mart, etc.

ok I am planning to put a dsb and a little rubble in the sump. I will have to go out and purchase some more sand. Do I need to cycle the sand in another container for a couple of weeks?

Thanks,

Shane

I don't even have my tank running yet so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I've been advised not to place the skimmer after the fuge, because then some of the beneficial things from the fuge will get skimmed out.

this is really to bump this....

Do I have to cycle the sand for the refugium in a seperate container before I put it in the fuge? I do have to buy new sand.
