Refugium Algae

I have recently set up a 40g fuge with Miracle Mud and some Live Sand. I bought some Chaeto and Caulerpa. Can I keep them together in the same refugium? I want to run my lights on 24/7 with the Caulerpa so if I have the Chaeto in there will it be OK with lights on continuously?

i agree, plants use the dark period for growth, though it seems with 27/7 lighting, they still grow...

i grow chaeto and two forms of red macro algaes. the chaeto and red algae grow in seperate levels of the fuge. and i run the lights 12-15 hours per day, not sure cuz i havnt paid much attention to what i have the timer set to...

Thanks for the input guys.....I read a bit further on how to run lights in a refugium and I agree what you both said....I have the lights on a timer and will keep them on night cycle for about 14-15 hours then :-)

I went ahead and placed both the caulerpa and the chaeto in the refugium.....I read that algaes do compete for nutrients but I'm going to give it a try and see how they work together.

Thanks again for the input :-)

Keep an eye on the caulerpa, I assumed you already knew this, but caulerpa can go into reproductive phase when conditions no longer favor its survival ie. lack of nutrients. If your mindful you will notice it becoming pale with green spots, pull out all that has turned white immediatly.

Everything I've seen in timing in the research on plants and algae suggest much better growth, thus more O2 production and more export of waste with normal cycling of the lighting.

It cost more to run the lights 24/7 and you get less export, so I have a hard time understanding why anyone would do this based on economic $ or export, or growth, or O2 levels.
