You can leave it on 24 hrs just make sure the agea doesn't go sexual on you or you'll have a big problem, although I have heard of leaving it on at night and off during the day they say it helps Ph fluctuations but that's all I know
yes oppisite cycle prevents ph swings but if you know anything about plants they grow vegativly when lights exceed a certain amount of daylight. once the light hrs deminish and a certain amount of no light hours is reached the go into sexual mode and produce offspring via fruit/seeds/etc. so if you leave lights on oppisite cycle of display it could eventually feel like it need to reproduce. basically leaving lights on 24hrs in sump/fuge doesnt hurt anything and prevents sexual response all together as long as water chemistry is proper. i have had a sump for two years now and leave lights on 24. my macro has been growing vegativly the entire time. it grows fast but this is good as all macro feeds on excess nutrients. now this can lead to crowding of algea in fuge so you have to harvest some from time to time and give it away..sell it...whatever. when you remove some of the algae your removing nutrients and allowing room for growth which also feed and removed all nutrients. best was to export nitrates naturally. leave lights on 24hours it will not hurt and will protect you from sudden possible sexual reactions as long as water chemistry stays proper.
build up 24 hours of light slowly so you dont kill the algea and react sexually. i prefer hardy macro so that it thrives under 24hour lighting and is always exporting all excess nutrients without a down time.
