what is the time that you recommend for having the light turned on? I have heard 24hrs, 12hrs, and 8hrs. I have also heard that do it opposite of your normal lights and heard that to do it with the same time as your lights.

It would be interesting to hear what type of light people use also.

I run my lights from 9 pm to 9 am. There is a little overlap With my display lights shut off at 10:30 PM. I'd did this because most of my fiddling in the sump is done between 9&10 :).

I use a plain old home depot cfl and chaeto grows great. A few months ago I switched to a screw led from amazon that was recommended here on RC and my chaeto started to die off a little so I'm back the cfl.

I currently do 24h because I don't really have any room for a timer. If I could chose I would do opp of daytime lights unless some one says a good reason other wise

14 hours here, opposite of the display tank, overlapped by an hour on each end.
Was using CFL, getting OK growth. Just switched to LED setuo that I converted and wired up to the Apex like before. CFL before was at approximately 4000K° color temp.
LED is now 5000°K color temp with 1700 lumen output.
I guess I will know how things look in a month to truly gauge results.

Another pic of the specs of the LED light I am using. $59 at Costco, and easy to wire up, and bypass the motion sensor. Had an extra MH I could have used, but saved that for my frag area of the sump.

10pm at night until 3pm the following day, basically reverse photoperiod from the display. I use a fishneedit 250 watt metal halide with a Phoenix 14k bulb. It helps heat up the tank at night when it is 60 degrees downstairs.
