Refugium Lighting question

Hi,

What Color Temp (K) and wattage would you suggest for a 25g refugium w/ Chaeto?

Any bulb links would also be appreciated :)

Thanks

For a 25gal refug with just chaeto you could use compact flourescents, maybe 1-2 watts per gal if you don't want to spend too much money. If you're planning on placing anything else in the refugium, make sure you check lighting requirements for that species.

Get one of those cheap clip on lights in electrical at Home Depot. CHange your bulb (you may have to look around a bit there) for a 5100K (some people use higher ones) bulb that runs cool. One of those ones that uses like... 23 W but puts out 60-75W. Otherwise it'll generate a lot of heat and when you put your arms in there you could get a nasty burn. Be GREEN and save energy too eh. I wouldn't run it 24/7. People suggest that with caluerpa to keep it from going asexual. Otherwise with cheato you want to give it a chance to perform other nightime functions.. prespiration? To help with nighttime pH run your fuge lights opposite your mdt lights and overlap them so your fuge light is on like 16-18 hrs. You may have to look around, or go to Lowes also to find one of these bulbs.

this is mine under a 70w bulb and dome

agreed, keep it simple and cheap. this will work fine for chaeto.

I think Melev did some tests , results on his site, and he said 5100K was better. Either will work. After all... it's just a weed.

Melev's Reef fuge light link.

Acrodave: What is that.. a zeovit reactor?

Thanks for that link, :)
You don't suppose it would make a difference if I went with the 16w/75w vs 19w/85w for a 25g fuge?

For a 25G, I'd use the bigger bulb. I've had good luck with daylight color bulbs that are in the 6000 - 6500K range.

yup a home made one out of a old media reactor

I took advice from one of you guys here and got the HD $6 light. They've got daylight bulbs and cool white bulbs in Flourescent. The Daylight bulb is more white than the Cool White, which is more yellow.

My stuff is growing now, finally. Thanks for the advice

The bulb on melv's reef seems to be a better deal, since its a CFL+ reflector combo. Anyone had any luck with plain daylight CFL?
