refugium question

will somenone please explain to me the benifit of a refugium. I have been thinking about adding a sum with a better skimmer, however maybe a hang on the back refugium would work. please advise.

A hang on the back refugium is not a place to put a better skimmer of the in-sump type, a refugium is just a refuge for macro algae and LR for pods and such to live peacfully. This refugium in turn provides a safe haven for pods which is food for your tank, and macro algae to help cut down your nitrates.
