I am adding a refugium to my tank and was wondering peoples thoughts on what to put in the bottom. I have heard of mud but it is a bit pricey and you have to replace it. Can I use my extra crushed coral and a bit of live cc mixed in ? If so do I have to have 4inches deep (as I have read on other threads)

I wouldn't use anything. The water flow through a refugium tends to be pretty slow, so there's a lot of potential to get detritus to settle on the bottom. If you have mud, sand. . .or worse, crushed coral or rock rubble, it'll make removing the detritus much more difficult. If you were to do a deep sand bed, yes, you want it to be about 4-6 inches. It's debatable whether the benefit is worth the trouble. I'd only do it if you truly feel you need the additional nitrate export.

So could I go BB in the tank and fuge? Then just have Cheato in the fuge?
