Refugium

What would be the best ingredients for putting in a refugium?I do not want to use Caulerpa but I do want to use Chaeto.Should I use Mineral Mud or Live Sand or can I use both?What creatures should I put in as well?

I use sand, snails & chaeto.

Either Mineral mud or live sand would do great. Depending apon the size of the refugium I would place no more than 3 algae eating snails. And 1 to 3 diatoms eating snails like the Trochus or the Astraea. Some Live Rock would help as well.

My refugium was started with miracle mud over 2 years ago. After the first year, the LFS that maintained the tank replaced the miracle mud with sand. That was a disaster! Growth in the refugium slowed and the main tank suffered. The main tank slowly spiraled downward until I finally had to try something. Hair algae was taking over.

About a month ago, I wised up and vaccumed out the sand. Refilled with miracle mud. I can tell a huge difference. More growth and more pods.

I used both the mud as a base and live sand on top to keep down the debris
