I am about to buy my first hob fuge.. I have heard so many good things about them. The one im buying is 13 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 12 aquafuge. I have plenty of lr rubble and some chaeto and halimeda on the way. Couple questions, is buying a hob even worth it? Will this size make any diff? Or am i just wasting my money? Do i have to put any snails etc inside of it?

personally, i would never pay that much for a HOB fuge. At that point, you could buy all the equipment to set up like a 30g fuge. If HOB is your only option, then why not just buy the biggest Aquaclear HOB filter (i believe its the 110) and turn that into a fuge? I believe its only 70 bucks, plus whatever you want to grow in it (and rock/sand). I just use a small clip on light on my AC 70 HOB fuge...

not a bad idea... have a penguin 350 laying around... And yea dumb me.... lol i built my stand with no intentions on getting a fuge so only have about 19 inches or so under the tank, and do not understand all the baffles and well pretty much everything but the overflow part..=) thanks for the advice.. any other comments?

There are lots of different ways to set up a refugium besides underneath or HOB. You might try looking for above tank refugiums or beside tank refugiums. As far as the baffles go, the 1st one water passes under and bubbles can pop out into the main refugium. Then they fall over and another baffle that the water has to go under traps the bubbles so they have a hard time getting in the next chamber where the returns are. I've been experimenting with some show style refugiums without the baffles, but they are such long tanks that bubbles tend not to be an issue. I'll try and get some pictures up.

Mels Reef has a good page that describes sumps and bubble traps.

And here are a couple of pictures of the show refugium we were working on. It went under a 100 Gallon tank. I left my camera at work with the pictures of it set up.

The water goes into the tank on the right into a sock. The skimmer pump will be in there too. The water travels all 4 ft. to the other side to keep air from getting back to the main system. It still needs some refinement, but just an idea to get you thinking outside of the box.

No, its already installed. I've got pics of it all set up in my camera but I left it at work. I'll try and get the pics up tonight or tomorrow.
