refugium

I know this has been brought up probably a million times, but I just want to get some opinions on having a DSB or BB in a refugium before I actually set mine up.

To function as an actual refigium, I'm guessing you will need some kind of substrate.
The refigium has two main concepts: copepod growth, and macroalgae growth. One of these things will not happen well without some kind of substrate.

My fuge is currently barebottomed.. planning on adding the sand whenever i get around to it..

I think if you're using it primarily to grow chaeto or some other macroalgae it would be fine. I just can't imagine copepods growing efficiently without a bed though.

Well pods would live in the chaeto and LR rubble, I don't see where they would need sand.

DSB are supposed to help lower nitrates though. I'm getting 2 cuttles so a DSB would come in use. I just don't want to have one and end up having more work than what it is worth or risk anything bad.

if you dont have a dsb in your main dt
then putting one in your fuge would definitely be a good idea...

if you have on in dt
then dont necessarily have to have one in your fuge...

some dont like dsb in fuge
bec its not as easy to get rid of the detritus... w/ only chaeto in there then one can easily see and remove the detritus which will accumulate in there...

if one wants a fuge dsb
then they might use a filter sock to catch the detritus so that it doesnt accumulate in the fuge...

my recom ???
in our system we have a dsb in both dt and 50gal fuge... i like using dsb but it was not necessary in both dt/fuge(chose to anyway - nitrates never registered even before adding fuge!)... in our next tank (and my recom fwiw) will have only 2-3" in the main dt so that the sand bed can be routinely gravel vac'd/cleaned... then a dsb located remotely either in a rdsb or in another display fuge (which could be in essence called a type of rdsb)...
:D
