A refugium is an area of either the main tank, the sump, or an entirely separate tank that is devoid of fish. This allows the small crustaceans like copopods and amphipods to breed undisturbed. Once the population is large enough, the pods will find their way into the display tank where they are food for the fish. There are several ways to set up a fuge but the majority of folks use a section of their sump and include macroalgae such as chaetomorpha which is lit in an opposite photo period of the tank. Refugiums are very simple to set up and help with biodiversity as well as providing a natural food sourse.
