My refuge consists of a 4-5" deep sand bed, 10 mangrove sprouts, a ball of chaetomorphia, and several large pieces of live rock. The live rock definitely houses a different variety of organisms than it would in my display tank, for example I see a lot of sponges and small crustaceans in the refuge live rock that I do not see as much in the display's live rock.
I do not keep any snails, hermits or any other animals in there, only what naturally occurs.

6" dsb , soccer ball of chaeto, few pounds of rock, 2 different urchins, a few snails, some worms.

sooner or later the mangroves will need more sand. always make sure, that the roots of the mangroves are covered by sand.
