I have one or two refurbished Canon lenses, and they're perfect. My logic may possibly be flawed, but here was my thinking on the subject when deciding whether or not to purchase a refurbished lens.
- All lenses go through a QC process by the company. . .sometimes they'll miss something; let's say that happens 1% of the time.
- Now, someone receives one of those faulty lenses and sends it back to the Nikon for a replacement.
- Nikon fixes the one or two things wrong, QCs the lens again and puts it back on the market. Now, there's always a chance they missed something else, but let's say that happens 5% of the time. According to my math, the refurbished lens has only a .05% chance of leaving the factory with a defect at this point.
Of course, these numbers are all made up, and I'm probably not accounting for everything, like there may be some defects that can't get fixed perfectly, but can still be fixed "good enough". Anyway, I'd certainly have no issues purchasing other refurbished camera gear in the future. It would just have to have the same warranty (which I think is always the case with any of the major brands).
Oh yeah, and second Misled on B&H. For used equipment, I've even called up their used sales department and the rep gave me a hands on review of the condition of the exact item I was going to purchase. I've had wonderful service with Adorama as well.
