remora pro not working well

i have a remora pro protein skimmer that I've had set up for a few months now and i'm not getting a very strong pull out of the tank as far as what's being skimmed http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=ACRP
this is what i have along with the the surface skimmer attachment and the rio 1400 that's included with the skimmer, i had herd these were good and pulled a lot from the tank but despite the good reviews i only pull about a quarter of the collection cup every few weeks or even longer. does anyone have any experience with this skimmer or a similar story? any ideas, what is being pulled is very dark and it seems there's always a lot of dry foam accumulated around the top of the pipe dumping into the collection cup but just not a lot being collected overall. any ideas...

I've got a regular Remora. I wasn't impressed with the output in the beginning either, but someone on RC recommended backing out the injector clean out screw. I must have had it in too deep because after backing it out, my skimming improved a lot. I just screw it in far enough to hold and no more.

I also used the skimmer box, but had trouble keeping the pump intake clean, especially with small snails crawling and sticking in the intake. Unfortunately the design of the skimmer box doesn't allow you to use a strainer on the pump intake. I've since taken the skimmer box off.

Remora pro's are a waste of money imo. They are suppose to pull a cup of skimmate every two weeks. I had one with a mag 7 on it for a while, replaced with an in sump skimmer and it was half its price, its pulling 1-2cups of dark skimmate per day. WHen i first added it to my tank, it was pulling almost 4 cups a day of dark skimmate, i'm guessing this is what the remora was missing, once it caught up it started to do 1-2 cups per day. Remora's are overated and overpriced.

i had a remora there ok. good luck there not very adjustable other that cup hight.buy a new tank with over flow is my recomendation. sorry

I have 2 of these and they work great for me. I have upgraded to a mag drive pump and they pull out about 1 full cup of dark stuff every 3-5 days depending on my feeding and if I stirr around any sand in the tank as I sometimes do while moving something or adding fresh water to the refugium. I dont have a auto-top off.

Upgrade to a mag-3 and keep the collection cup clean every time its emptyed.

I'd sell it, and get a typhoon by d&D off ebay for around 50-60 bux (which will skim a cup a day of dark skimmate) or get the burmuda hot skimmer. There along the same price as the remora, except they'll pull a cup a day or more. Or the octopus hot for around 100. But you will stay disapointed with the remora til the end. Aqua c makes good insump skimmers, but this one is junk.

Mine seems to need adjusting all the time. I just walked in the door from being gone since Monday. I cleaned the collection cup right before I left and there was only about a inch in the cup tonight.

I was think about replacing mine as well. I have not read to many good things about the Typhoon. Kind of interested in the Bermuda skimmers but have not heard much about them yet.

I've only heard of good things about the typhoon's but its your decision. The only thing i'm not crazy about is they seem to get clogged and may start a syphon. they are a great cheap alternative. As for the burmuda, check them out online, there design is great imo and i've seen some pics of them working from a few. There only drawback imo is price, but they will probably pull 2cups a day of dark green skimmate.

If you really want a good skimmer that will serve some use in the future, get a tunze in tank skimmer. They are good skimmers and you can use it in a sump if you eventually get one.

On the regular Remora and the Nano unit, I've noticed a significant difference in skimmate production by tilting the unit to the left and adjusting slightly up and back until the loudest gurgling sound is made.
