Remote DSB and fuge question

Im setting up a 125Gal with a 75Gal fuge/sump. Plumped from the sump will be two 20 longs for the RDSB.
My question is since I will have the two RDSBs is there any need to have any sand in the fuge? Im already thinking of going bare bottom in the main but im still leaning towards a 1-2in sand bottom.

According to the RDSB in a bucket threat 80 gal of RDSB is plenty for a 125 gal display tank.

If you can put the sand in RDSB in such a way that you can replace portions of it without disturbing the rest you should be able to keep it going indefinately. Can you put some water tight dividers in the RDSBs?

I did mine the opposite of what you're setting up - I dump the overflow from my show tank directly into a 75 gallon DSB fuge that also has about 75 lbs of live rock in it. From there it goes into a 20 gallon tank that holds my skimmer, that one dumps into my 30 gallon sump, then back to the main tank. With the fuge being the first thing downstream from the main tank, it gets the food tidbits that don't get eaten by the show tank critters. There are plenty of worms in the DSB, it looks like a lot of tiny monofilament lines are growing from it when I feed the main tank. The skimmer knocks out a good bit of what's left, then fairly clean water makes it back to the main tank. I'm thinking of adding a show critter to the fuge but I'm not sure what to use just yet - either a purple lobster or peacock mantis. The fuge is full of pods and keeps the main tank plenty populated.
