I picked up several new SPS for my tank last week.
The problem I am having is that the plugs on which they are mounted are quite large and thus its difficult to find a place in the reef they can be put.
Yes, you can detach them. Usually you can pry them off, or else just cut them off at the base with a heavy scissor or side cutter of some sort. Use some superglue gel to remount your frag, and you're golden.
I pretty much remove all plugs, only two in my tank out of 45+ corals, many came on plugs. They are usually pretty easy to snap right off with a pair of needle nose plyers or as otolith mentioned cutting with heavy scissors or heavy duty cutters of some kind. I have a frag cutting kit I bought with really sharp cutters that cut through easily. The plugs can be a pain to find homes for and often have undesireable algae growing on them which I don;t want to introduce into my tank.
